For those of you that own or have considered owning a Lexicon you should read this link:

"Lexicon actually put a full Oppo BDP-83 INSIDE of a chassis, slapped a label on it and is shipping it for $3000 more"

The $3000 chasis

And for those of us who spend kilos in audio, IT IS A SERIOUS WARNING

what makes me lol big-time is the number of people who defend this pricing, by mentioning a slightly different analog stage. like that's worth $3000

Well, I never really took notice of Lexicon until now. Btw, I've seen much better DIY cases for much less.

This would, hilariously enough, qualify as a "high-end digital source" here.

People pay top dollar for "the best," so there will always be top-dollar offerings whether or not the innards are worth it.

That Lexicon was confident enough to try a stunt like this is a sad comment on audiophiles.

This is not the first time that this sort of thing has happened. It's been going on at least as long as the CD player has existed. Meridians first CDP was a ^n markup re-shell of the token Phillips unit at the time IIRC.

90%+ of CDPs use the same transports because so few companies design their own and just buy a DVD drive. QUAD, Linn and further up the hill, Esoteric and Accuphase are I think exceptions to this.

Using a transport mechanism is one thing - using the whole player lock, stock, and barrel - that is quite another. If high end companies aren't at least offering better analog output stages, and power supplies, then their digital products worthless - they aren't good for the high end.

There was a similar incident with a Goldmund DVD player using many components from Pioneer player in a fancy chassis.

The funniest part is its a bog standard BDP-83, using old firmware with the old problems (that Oppo has corrected with FW updates for their player) still in place per the Audioholics review. It has none of the upgrades or the Sabre DACs that the $800 BDP-83SE is packing.

Gee let me think, $3500 Lexicon rebadge, or Oppo's far superior SE version for $800? Man that is a tough one.

Also, one has to wonder how the Lexicon one has THX certification and the Oppo doesn't.....
