Does the AKG K701/2 do anything better than HD800? - Page 13

Although I mostly enjoy my K70x, I would like to repeat that it needs to be cranked up pretty loud to engage the soul.... the soundstage collapses at low volumes, the presentation sounds lean (lacking fullness of tone) and transients soften.

How does the HD800 fair in this regard?

Does it also belong to the "Crank me up" category?

Some recordings with very large dynamic range are a bit difficult to enjoy on the K70x, they need to be played loud to sound real and then those orchestral peaks yell into my ears. (not unbalanced/sterile/strident... just TOO LOUD... ~ 11-12 o'clock, medium gain, headroom ultra micro)

Yep unfortunately the hd800 needs a fairly high volume to sound at its best.

^^ that is a classic underpowered headphone syndrome (UHS).

Tried it with headphones systems that were worth several times mine same conclusion

there is the reason for HD800. that 300ohms spec is based on the first 1hz, meaning it does not tell you that at mid range it jump to almost 700ohms!

1 My system should already be enough to drive those. I don't think the rudistor or cec are supposed to be weak .
2 As I said earlier I have tried other amps such as phonitor, zana deux etc... I doubt sennheiser would build the hd800 and make it almost impossible to drive.
3 There are 2000 ohm sennheiser hd414 out there and they are not impossible to drive

I'm totally against cable upgrade for sound quality, but I read somewhere in this forum that by going 'balanced' with HD800 a few dbs, ~5db, is added to the sensitivity which means louder.

That's another way of going about it (if your amp has balanced output).

None of the amps have a problem to drive them loud, my rudistor is at 10% (pc max > 840c > rpx33 10%) at the moment and the hd800 are already too loud.
The question asked by bhanja_trinanjan was if the hd800 would sound good if not used at high volume and I just don't think they were designed for use at low volumes if they weren't sold with balanced cable and most amp that can use the cable they were sold with wont make them sound good at low volume.

But with my amp, I set the volume to the same 12 o'clock setting for both the HD800 and T1 .

Don't let the 600+ohms scare you, they are very efficient headphones!

So do all headphones that I've ever heard, except for the Grado GS1000/PS1000.

I probably should have said to sound good instead but edition 9/cd3k as well, only need low/moderate measured volume to sound great if you like their sound signature of course

My experience seems to back your observations. I love the HD650 phone and valve amps - but used on techno and hip-hop I just don't "get-it". These genres can only be understood by me when mated to my 701 and solidstate driven. This has always led me to believe that if one knew how the music was monitored then it is best to listen to that music with phones that are similar in tonal balance to the monitoring system. One then has more scope to understand the intention of the artist. I feel it is quite obvious what "tone" was used when monitoring when listening to a recording using differently toned headphones - I feel extra musical content is unleashed when I have a tonal match, I can then emotionalise more with the art.
