Hmm of those I only saw D9,Hurt Locker, Inglourious Basterds, liked both D9 and IB but I can't really choose between the two.
I thought Hurt Locker was ok but not nearly as good as the hype.

Edit: voted D9 because they had a smaller budget than IB

Wow, these are the nominees for this year? Once again, the bar was set very low.

Of the nominees, I've seen Avatar, District 9, Hurt Locker and Up in the Air.

Based on that, I voted Avatar, but I think it's close between that and Hurt Locker. Kind of depends what the committee ends up valuing more - skillful dialogue, acting, and plotting vs. game-changing visual creativity.

watching Hurt Locker & Up in the air soon.

but D9 was def much better than Avatar....especially considering D9 had the cheapest budget...and avatar having the biggest budget.

I'm hoping it will be IB, but it will probably be Avatar. I voted Avatar.

Meh, D9 may have had a marginally more creative plot and more unique writing etc., but the argument for Avatar wouldn't hinge on those things (it's probably at the bottom of the pile if these are all you take into consideration) - it would rest on Avatar's significance, for lack of a better word, in the grand scheme of moviemaking, thanks to it meaningfully and truly pushing the boundaries of what we think is possible in film.

I think in terms of a movie "experience," I would definitely choose Avatar. It brought a new element in watching a movie because I actually felt like I was immersed in the universe. I didn't see it in 2D so I wouldn't know how it would be watching it normally.

D9 had a cool plot to me and I also liked that movie. I liked the fact they portrayed aliens in a non-orthodox manner (non-imperialistic lol). Had a more creative story-line and everything.

Inglorious Bastards was an awesome action movie, and had the usual stuff you'd see in a QT movie, but nothing getting best picture of the year IMO.

I voted for Avatar, but I'm sure there's a lot of close ones. There was just something about watching it in 3D (despite the initial dizziness) that I loved about it. J.C. could have released it in 2D if he wanted because it's not like anything there required anything special to release in 2D. I guess it's the fact you can see something close to the vision of how he wanted his ideas to be portrayed that makes it meaningful.

My prediction with some opinions:

Will win: Avatar
Dark horse: A Serious Man
Should win: The Hurt Locker
Foreign nom better than most on the domestic list: The White Ribbon
I can't believe they didn't nom: Julia (The Tilda Swinton vehicle, not Julia & Julia)

I fear pretty much the same thing, but I think Up has a small chance as well, if not then surely for Animated Feature Film.

Milk Of Sorrow for Foreign Language.
Burma VJ for Documentary

The only two out of that list that I've seen so far are Avatar and District 9, but I'm planning on seeing Up In The Air this weekend. Between the two that I've seen I liked Avatar much better, I really didn't like District 9, it was on my list of one of the worst movies I've seen last year. I know many people liked it but it just wasn't for me I guess, I expected much better.

The weapons in District 9 were totally badass. I was sitting there thinking "I would play the HELL out of this video game".

Also, it was pretty funny how similar the end battles in District 9 and Avatar were

Wait, how is budget a relevant measure of the quality of a movie?

Well, just ask yourself which movie has it own long thread on head-fi.

My vote is for Inglourious Basterds. I thought it was a damn brilliant movie. There wasn't a single second in the movie when I was bored; if it were four hours long I would be more than happy. I'd rank it up there with Tarantino's greatest films. Although, it didn't provoke any profound thoughts or change the way I see things; it was just pure entertainment. IMO, best picture should be reserved for eye-opening movies.

District 9 was good but it didn't really do anything for me. It's one of those movies where seeing it once is good enough; there's nothing to go back for.

Those are the only two out of the list that I saw
