Made first purchase, but undecided.

Hello all,

I have been lurking around on these forums for the past week trying to find the perfect set of headphones for my tastes. Firstly, I'll admit that I am new to purchasing any sort of Mid/High-end headphones. A few days ago I went out and purchased a set of Sennheiser HD428's. While these headphones definitely sound great, I don't think they have what I want.

I mostly listen to house music, maybe a little trance or hiphop here and there. So I definitely want a pair of headphones with good bass and highs. I like a really 'up in your face' sound, as if you're standing directly in front of the speakers. The main thing I dislike about my HD428's is that in my opinion the bass is lacking. (Also, I do not think that these headphones are worth the $80 I paid.)

I've been looking around the forums, and I've seen some people suggesting the sony MDR-SA1000's or Denon headphones for the type of music I listen to. What would you guys suggest? My price range ends at $150

(I know they're out of my pricerange, but do AKG K701's sound good with House/Trance music?)

If you aren't apposed to open headphones I would maybe try some Grado's. They may not have the best bass, I think it is enough, but they are definitely "up in your face" and "fun".

I was so tempted to go buy the SR80i's but I had to drive to chicago to get them, so I settled for the HD428's. Do you think SR80i's would be better than my 428's? (The SR80i's are $20 more than the 428's.)

Also check out the Dennon D1001's, this is probably going to be my next purchase. I've read many reviews that say they are the best deal in the price range, and they should suit your music taste well.

Especially when you MarkL mod them.

But to the OP, the SR80i has a good amount of bass. If you don't mind shipping, the MS1 is $99 (including shipping).

I know this is out of my price-range, but does anyone know if the K701's sound good with House/Trance music? (If these are MUCH better than anything sub $150 I'd rather save and get those)

I don´t have the phones, or experience of them, but there sure a lots of info, use the search function. From what I remember reading myself, they´re not exactly for your taste. Bass isn´t that strong, and they´d need different music to reveal their best. Someone will correct me if needed...

I'm inclined to say Denon or Grado. The norm of D1001 sits at around 100 bucks nowadays if my memory serves me right. I have the upper brother in the chain, D2000, which is known for a good amount of bass but recessed mids. Can't speak for D1001 since I don't own it but wouldn't surprise me if they hold similar sound signatures. Do a search, you should get hundreds of hits. Grado cans are known for coloured tonal balance slightly in the low and the high, but not so much so to cloud the adjacent spectrum.

Ultrasone HFI-780 for $200 ~ $220 or Ultrasone HFI-550 for around $120 (plus shipping off eBay): both have great punchy and clean bass for those genres. And don't look back...
