Buffer Length Setting in Foobar

I'm just wondering what this does and what I should have it set to?
At the moment I have it set to 500ms. Does it make a difference to anything?

No sound difference, but there is a difference for the volume control. If WASAPI is on, you will have a delay. 500ms for 500ms delay.

The only time I have to change my setting is when I tap into my network hard drive. When I'm listening to music stored on my current PC or an attached hard drive, it is not necessary. If I don't increase it with my network drive, I get dropouts. Once increased it runs great.

Ok thanks guys. I will just keep it at 500ms and see how it goes.

I have mine set for 6000 ms. At the default setting I sometimes got dropouts playing files from another computer.

Mine's set to the highest WASAPI seems to support, 2000ms. I keep it as high as I can because I can get dropouts under heavy disk I/O, such as when my roomates are copying large amounts of files from my machine over our dorm's GigE switch.

Is there any downside to having it that high?

None that I've found. I still get bitperfect output since a SS DTS receiver that's on loan to me is able to properly decode DTS data from a WAV file.

I don't use digital volume controls or anything that alters the bitstream in any way. There might be a lag in changing the volume- you'll have to experiment to find out.
