I don't think that the circular saw blade is suitable for metal, use one of the plain brown cutting wheels, and wear eye protection

I agree completely. IMHO, using a hacksaw is not optimum, either. (Although, an X-acto razor saw would be a better choice.) The shaft on an RK27 is very soft. Pliers will mark up the shaft something fierce. The body is only plastic, so gripping it with a vice or pliers is problemmatic, too. A dremel cutoff tool will slice through the shaft like butter - but go slowly and carefully. Because the shaft metal is so soft, it will load up the cutoff wheel quickly. When that happens, it will grab and either jump off or snag and break.

If you have a standard collection of Dremel bits, there's a stone cylinder bit with a depression in the tip. It will accept the diameter of the pot shaft inside the depression and can be used to clean up/round off the tip quite nicely after you cut it off.

As others have sad, tape around the shaft, baggie it or similar - the shaft grease is exposed on the RK27 and will soak up metal powder like a sponge.
