Full sized cans, closed. What for my use? - Page 2

ATH-A900, The second best closed headphone that i've heard unamped. The other one would be W5000.

Of the 'phones up for discussion, I've only tried the D2000s, which are excellent headphones. But, based on your requirements, I can't recommend them.

When amped, the D2000s sound great, with well-extended highs and lows. I don't know if I'd call the bass muddy, but it's certainly a bit overwhelming. However, when I tried running these without an amp, I really thought they lost a lot of their sound quality. The extension was lost, and the bass really did become muddy and uncontrolled. The bottom line was that they really fell apart without good amplification.

I'll just throw this out there too: you might look into a pair of Ultrasones, such as the HFi 780s. I also had a pair of these before, and I thought they sounded quite good both with and without an amp.

I'll buy a Sennheiser HD428 soon. It is supposed to be a neutral and balanced headphone with bass. The Sony MDR V6 is good too if you're willing to accept it's a MDR V6.

There are some vintage gems too. I stumbled upon a Pioneer Monitor 10 which I prefer over the V6-es in sound but is a bit of an ear squasher and skull crusher. I'm exaggerating a bit, they are good for an hour or so before your head needs a break. The oldies are worth a look though.

DBI-Pro 700. Circumaural, comfortable, built like a tank, great sound, respond very well to EQ'ing and are a steal at $30 + S&H off eBay. Work great out of my Cowon S9 and my TBAAM.

Thanks for all input. The most relevant cans within my budget are HD428, Shure 440 and ATH-M50.

How do they compare in terms of sound signature, comfy and isolation? I like my cans to sound "fun", like my Grado's or my Naim Hifi system. Focus on music instead of sounding too "studio" if you know what I mean
