I am talking about earphones; the D2 does a decent job with headphones, but cannot 'drive' earphones. What I mean is this: any portable will get way too loud with any earphone: volume isn't an issue, nor a benchmark for me.

The issue is that the D2 cannot drive earphones: it suffers big bass roll off, channel narrowing, and sound completely lifeless when compared to it outputting signal to an external amp which can 'drive' earphones for depth of bass. The D2 only has volume, but its driving prowess is limited to exactly that.
