REVIEW: Denon D2000 vs Beyer DT770 Pro 80 vs Sony MDR XB700 - Page 3

Thread Necro!

I have to agree with Kukuk. A lot of people bash the Sonys for no good reason IMO other than the perception that they are cheap, boom bass cans... which they are not. I'm also shocked that the Sonys are described as having "Narrow soundstage" and the D2000 is praised for soundstage, the XB700 definitely had a wider soundstage, about as wide as the DT770.

The XB700s have an ocean of bass but they are well integrated with the mids. It's not a boom of midbass, it's a slow crescendo of deep, deep bass. The treble is in no way muffled. It's got a smooth roll off, similar to what you find in the HD650, though with less clarity, detail and extension, but it's not muffled. The mids are a bit sucked out, but then so are the DT770's and the Denon's.

We clearly will have to agree to disagree.

Then again I have hundreds of hours of burn in on them. The highs are anything but muffled for me. Actually if you have the volume up high they are too sharp. Otherwise the highs are quite nice.

Get more than 20 hours of burn-in and post some impressions.

I sold both DT770 Pro/80 and ATH-M50 in favor for keeping XB500 & XB700 so I suppose every1 have their different opinions. :p I didn't like the Beyers at all of how mids and highs sounded and it lacked somewhat in midbass for my liking and depending on what I listened to I almost prefered the crappy Sennheiser HD 212 Pro over them. xD I like both of the Sonys depending on what I actually listen to but the genres I prefer most fits better for XB500 IMO, trance, dubstep, breakbeat etc. for its greater punchy bass and smooth highs.

I'd bet the XB700s wouldn't sound too great off an OTL tube amp either.

you should see how you like a pair of ath-es7s with like 80 hours of burn-in. i hate them out of a headphone out, but a cmoy or ALO RX make these things come alive. after 80 hours of use, they are almost too bassy for me with no EQ and the bass boost turned off (inside the cmoy).

but the reason i mention this is that the mids and highs are beautiful and the bass is the most accurate ive heard. you said you travel a lot, and this setup is perfect.

I have to agree, muffled high is an understatement.  I see people complaining about the highs being to sparkly or just the opposite.

My thoughts exactly. I think the D2000s are very good headphones, but I also believe that the $150 difference between them and the DT770s is rendered purely in their design. They are too costly.

Um, not really. I own both, the Beyers and the Denons, and the latter has much better soundstage and lower bass response. Also the mids are more natural - some might say more pleasant... D2000 is basically the hi-end version on DT770 80Ohm. Beyers take punishment much better because of the construction and have a better seal, but that's it. I use Beyers for home-recording - a good seal and one sided cable is a big plus in that department. When listening to my favorite records I always grab the Denons.

No. The high end version of the DT770 Pro 80 ohm is the DT770 Premium / Manufaktur 600 ohm, which is IMO by far a better headphone than the flawed D2000.

Don't they use an entirely different driver and sound entirely different?

I do agree that the D2000 is a more refined DT770/80 with better bass (less quantity and a little tighter), mids (not as recessed), and not as harsh treble. Honestly the DT770/80s for me were terrible cans. The D2000s definitely don't do everything right (bass needs to be tighter with less quantity, mids need to be filled in more, and highs decreased a bit, they also come off as slow) and have a lot of flaws but then again no can does. It all depends on what you want though. I would like to try a DT770/600 some day. They really sound like a can I'd enjoy.

They sure sound entirely different.

They have nothing in common when it comes to sound.

Another step up is the NoXter modded closed back DT880
