First of all, I never insisted on anything. I sent the money immediately, as I always do. I only ASKED him if he would ALLOW me to back out of the deal. It was his choice. He chose to do so, which was great. Only, he didn't refund my money for almost a week, and even lied about having done so. I had to go through Paypal's mediation process to get it back. Now I see he's lying again. _I_ was the one who said that I WOULD PAY HIM EXTRA for his troubles. I said, look - I made a mistake on the amp, and if you let me back out of it, you can keep $20 for your trouble. Despite this, no refund. Please can I have my money back? No refund. So finally I say, look, if you're not going to give me my $160 back, can I at least have the amp I've bought from you? Then I get a response - this was my favorite - "I already sold it to someone else locally." So now this guy has BOTH TAKEN MY MONEY AND SOLD THE AMP TO SOMEONE ELSE!
I STILL wouldn't have left negative feedback at this point, even though I was annoyed, because sometimes the credit problems happen and banks can be annoying.
But the final straw was when I started the paypal mediation process to get my money back, because after a few days, I'm basically convinced he's just walked off with my money. Then I get an email from him saying that he's just paid me through paypal, so I can now go and cancel the dispute. Oh great, I think, and go to my paypal account, where I find... nothing. I contact paypal - no payment's been made, it's a total lie. He's just trying to get me to cancel the dispute. Fortunately, I kept up with the dispute, and paypal's mediation process found in my favor and awarded me the full refund.
I'm sorry, but having sold over $10,000 of photo gear over the years, I've only had one major problem - I once bought a laptop from a loser in Washington State who simply never sent it, and I was out $1400 that I never recovered. So I don't take too kindly to people's talk about how their banks have their money, they have credit problems, etc. If you don't have the money in the bank to cover a few hundred dollars, you shouldn't be buying and selling stuff online worth hundreds of dollars.
One the photo forums I deal with, we regularly buy and sell and trade lenses that cost upwards of $1000 for special events. You need a lot of trust and a lot of positive feedback to do this, because sometimes you're putting yourself on the line for a large amount of money. So I take these things a bit seriously. If I buy something from you, you'll be paid within the hour. If you buy something from me, it will be shipped out the next day, and it will be very well boxed so that it can't be damaged even if the postman tosses the package across the room (which they regularly do.) If I have a problem, I communicate with the other party and I expect the same consideration of others. Other than this, I've had nothing but good experiences at head-fi, and hope to continue to do so.
