what is the agilent cable tester telling me?

hi,

if i use the agilent cable tester to test resistance on a bundle of 4 12awg wires or one 4awg wire i am reading more resistance than i am on a single 14awg wire!

it is giving me 2 to 3 on 14 awg wires, and about 5 on a bundle of 12awg or a 4awg. what is that, ohms? sory to be stupid. i am not sure how the thing works.

is this thing broken?

thanks,

well, i was kind of hoping kowan or someone would answer this. i don't know what the heck the number means. also i don't know why the number is higher on multiple wires or larger wires.

i got this thing from a phone company sale for electrical workers. it was for nothing. i'd still like to know how to use it. i figured out the other tests but i don't know what it is telling me on the resistance test. if it is even working right.

thanks,

Give us the model number. Maybe someone can help track down what it means.

it is a wirescope 350. i found the manual. it is not designed for testing the type of wire i was testing. it did come with "clips". so i thought that was what it did. i guess all that matters is that the top of the screen says "pass" when the test completes. the actual numbers it comes up with don't really matter. it is probably not giving a proper reading since it is for data cable testing. luckily i paid $100 for this $3,000 machine lol.

sorry i bothered you guys about this.

Maybe this is a good time to point out the difference between DC resistance and AC impedance.

The wirescope is probably using AC voltage at a high frequency to read the impedance of the cable. When you bundle the wires up, the capacitance of the cable increases, which increases it's impedance at high frequencies.

Those might me category numbers as in CAT-5 for network cables
