I don't know about the e-reader possibilities, as it is not an e-ink display; it's a trade-off and Apple chose to give us a full color, full-motion display instead.

E-ink is much less fatiguing to the eyes and I think that will keep many of the "older" target market from adopting this as a magazine/newspaper replacement en masse IMO.

I am blown away that this thing does not have a USB port; it must have an SD card slot though, so all is not lost with external storage. I am also wondering if bluetooth file transfer is allowed.

It's also troubling that the max internal storage is limited to 64GB, when my iPod classic has 160GB; I know that it's a 1.8" HDD and not SSD, but it is still pretty small.

$30/mo. isn't bad if it's truly unlimited data, but it would be nice if someone offered a pre-paid ala carte plan for this. It would be very cool if you could turn this thing into a wireless router to serve a small local network, or at least tether it to your Airport base station.

Any flash support for the browser yet?

Yea.... I just got home and read some of the reviews and impressions over at Engadget; looks like a beefed up iPod Touch to me. I might only get one if I didn't get a netbook for christmas.

With 5 computers/6 screens in my room right now I really doubt I would find a need for this haha.
Would be very cool to have though; just for video consumption and net browsing in Starbucks/when I go to college I guess.

complete and utter disappointment harddrive is smaller then my ipod, no optical out, no mac OS, Iphone OS and i heard the safari doesnt even support flash on this either. I see it having its place in schools for text books and people that want it for that reason and few others but this thing is fail in my book. 700 for this id rather pay 999 and get a macbook.

interesting...kind of a beefed up iTouch. not quite a netbook though with no word document capability, but i'm sure you could download a app for that.

i'm waiting for iPad 4GS next year...with at least 120 GB HDD, improved keyboard, webcam, and digital out..

Seems to me that the only 2 things this thing will really be useful for is watching video and as an E Book reader. It's way too expensive to get the 64 GB 3G one. IMO anyway. Unless they have changed something drastically with sound quality, it won't be worth anything for music. Guess we'll all have to wait until someone braves the waters and puts it to the test.

Perhaps the 16GB 3G version. Just don't load it up too much with video.

It would be ultra-cool if you could use your iPhone to tether to it or any laptop, but alas, AT&T will NEVER allow tethering in our lifetime. They can't keep up with the data usage in NY let alone alowing everyone else to use it as a mobile hotspot.

<Dreaming of AT&T better service> SLAP wake up! Not gonna happen.


Does everyone know about the $30 discount for iPhone user data plans. If not, research it. You can save the $30 bucks that you'll spend on the iPad data usage.

I will stick to my phone,it does everything the iPod does plus takes pics video SMS gps compass and if I want a book I will get an audio book. I mean who reads books anymore?

Since there is no USB, sort of makes it pointless as an offloading device, but if the IPS screen is real - woohoo!

I spoke to AT&T. They didn't have many specifics BUT it appears that if you want a mobile 3g connection card, it's gonna set you back $60 a month whereas the iPad only carries the $30 unlimited connection plan. Huge saving via the iPad if you want internet connection and browsing.

Really???!!!! There is the typical Apple cable that connects to your computer to unload which terminates in a USB port. I don't understand why a USB port on the iPad is that big of a deal. It will come like any other iPhone of Touch cable which will connect you to your pc to upload and download. Plus, you can use bluetooth if needed. Question is do you go with the wifi version or 3g version. I assume the 3g version will include wifi capabilities as well as 3g capabilities.

Does anyone know for sure that the 3g version is not wifi capable? That would be contradicatory to every Apple product, except the Nano and Shuffle.

Hopefully this will be the first in the line of many improved upon models. Mac usually suffers from price vs. power issues. I've read no flash ability, sort of like the iphone (can that be confirmed?), for an internet focused product, I think that's a bit off center. It doesn't pay to be an early adapter of Apple products.

I'll second that. Looks like apple tried to merge the two but failed. Still more sensible to have an iphone/itouch and macbook. It's actually not a tablet PC, which is what I was expecting. I would've been impressed with a macbook packed inside this thing.

One group it does market to really well is digital book readers. I think its a joke to try and read a book or full page article on a 3.5" screen.

Nope no flash at all i didnt watch the live conference thing but from what i heard he actually had a website fail from lack of flash while he was demoing lol. That is fail right there.
