Noise cancelling headphones good for walking around?

Hi,
Currently I have an AKG K77 (closed) that I use with my ipod touch on my way to work and home daily. It's quite comfortable however I just hope the isolation could be better. When I was walking on the street there is too much environmental noise I can hear: cars, wind blowing on my phone etc. So I am now thinking of buying a noise cancelling phone. Does anyone have any experience in using these phones on the street? I'm mostly concerned about:
1. Noise from car nearby
2. The wind blowing off my phone (quite strong where I live)

Please do not recommend IEMs, I had them and they do not work for me.

Any tips?
Cheers,
John

I don't think noise canceling will help much in what you are trying to suppress. (I don't personally have experience with the noise-canceling headphone in the scenarios your mentioned.)
Noise canceling works by using small microphone(s) close to where your ears are in order to pick up the noise. But I *think* wind noise would sound quite different between what that microphone picks up and what your ear hears, due to the different shapes at the vent/phones/cushions/ears.
Usually noise canceling works well with lower frequency sound, like the consistent humming sound from engines. It doesn't work well against speech and high pitch sounds. Not sure if it'll work well against the car noise you hear.

Noise canceling 'phones are one big mislead . They dont do good job in isolation , have negative impact on SQ , you have to carry big battery housing which is heavy and bulky for portable use ! My recommendation is hd 25 1 which is one of the best in terms of sound, isolation/comfort, dont need an amp, very light with small footprint. If the price is out of your budget you should look in akg k450 newer version on of akg k26p .

I would have to agree. I would also suggest looking at the Sennheiser HD 25s and see if they're for you. But yea Noise cancelling doesn't really work that well for high pitched sounds.
