What does clipping sound like? I recently ripped and encoded the album to flac. I hear what sounds like crackle on the left side.

Yeah, that would be clipping. It also happens a lot in Halo.

Hmm well this is interesting. Scratch off Praises to the War Machine then, since I'm pretty sure I hear distortion with some of the lower bass, and some piercing highs that don't sound like they off a cymbal. Can't decide if there's some with distorted guitars though. How do you get those graphs to check? Are there different types of distortion?

I would be interested to know what 5-10 records LFF would say are the best mastered albums of the decade ... you seem to know your stuff and I would check out all of the album you would have on your list :-)

I like the sound of Noah and the Whale - The first days of Spring.

Good to know it isn't me imagining it, or me having faulty equipment. It is a shame really, because once you notice clipping/distortion on a track, it starts to pop out at you whenever you listen to it.

Is there a rock album from this decade that has mastering and production that you don't have to apologize about something for? Something where you don't have to add a "but" to and say "this album has good mastering but..."

Tool 'Lateralus' - best rock mastering
Dr. Dre 'The Chronic 2001' - best hip hop mastering
Beatles 'Remasters' stereo - best re-release mastering

Hrm...

The Beatles Mono Box sounds incredible IMO.

I found the new Rammstein CD (Liebe ist für alle da) actually sounds very good. I didn't notice any clipping and it has decent soundstaging. There is loudness, but not as bas as other stuff, and it's mastered better than the majority of stuff out there. I mean I put on a "Bullet For My Valentine" CD and it had a crap ton of clipping and compression, which the Rammstein CD did not have.

I could list 10 right now but I want to make sure 1) they are easily available, 2) affordable and 3) available on CD in case you don't have a vinyl rig.

i made a thread about it somewhere else... but Tom Petty's new live anthology sounds phenomenal. one of the best sounding new releases i've heard in years. and it's available in many formats.

I find a lot of the Beatles stereo re-masters painful to listen to. Sometimes the hard panning is too overwhelming.
