Is there anything that can compete with the K1000 sound and/or Stax sound for under $100? Looking for an upgrade.

Did you mean to write under $1,000? Cause if you meant $100 then certainly this is a joke. You can pick up some entry level Stax cans (or really old Lambdas) and an adapter (the one that lets you play them off a power amp, forget exactly what its called) for a few hundred dollars. Used SR-001 mk 2 systems start at $200.

A live acoustic show at a jazz club. Tickets are under $100.

Of course there's stuff under $100 that compete with the K1000, because it's just that much of a POS.

Anyway, if you're looking under $100 your best best is some vintage speakers and a gainclone or T-Amp in a nearfield setup. For example, a set of vintage Realistic Minimus 7W can be had for under $50, and sound very similar to older NHT designs.

If you must have headphones, I heavily suggest the Audio-Technica ATH-AD700 for under $100.

As far as dynamics the DT48 is similar in many ways.. IMO it's the closed equivilent.. Tone, timbre, neutrality, transparency.. The big differences are sound stage & the highs, which the K1000 does much better.. Some found the DT48 for under a 100..

Listened to a pair of K1000 and Sony SA5000 today, very similar in all regards. Sound characteristics being more towards mids and highs than bass, with great imaging and immense soundstage. I would give the edge to the SA5000 for overall sound quality though you can't beat the K1000's imaging. Both excellent, but if it were my choice I'd likely go SA5000.

I really have to question almost all replies in this thread...

edit: read OP as 'under 1000' not 'under 100'. Disregard my post..
