Thinking about moving out of the US...

So I have an odd question, my wife and I have are thinking about moving out of the US after we are through with school. We have thought about Vancouver, Ireland, or England so far. But here is my question, would an American be well received say in Ireland? Would people be friendly and ok with me as a neighbor? This is something I have wondered a lot about when we think about leaving here.

Sometimes I feel like moving far away, but still, I would want to live in the US. Change is good, but small steps can be a good start. I've had job changes in the same area that made me realize that I don't need a drastic change to feel happier.

But moving far, far away would be fun, right? Start over and experience life again. Maybe I'm just not that adventurous.

I would advise to first look into visa stuff and potential employment. The hardest part of going somewhere new is dealing with all the bureaucracy involved, and making sure you hit all the necessary deadlines. The people would most likely accept you well so long as you are a nice person. I am an American living in Germany with no problems, and all the countries you listed are typically more friendly than the Germans are toward Americans. However, it will take a bit of work as an American couple to get the right visas, job offers, etc... you just need to do the research before you go.

Good question ... I moved out of the US about three years ago. I met my now wife. We long distance dated for two years before I decided to leave the US and move to Japan. We live in Tokyo now. The reasons were not only because my wife is Japanese but I no longer like what the US represents. At the time it was Bush ... so in some ways it is political, but also cultural. The US mindset, generally speaking, is just plain wrong. Unsustainable and selfish.

I have to say it was the best move I ever made. Japan has its problems, don't get me wrong, but it is so much better. Health care is amazing, mass transit, healthy lifestyle (food). People are friendly.

So I say get out of the US while you can ... it is truly a sinking ship.

I can suggest something like - go to USAJOBS.GOV - There are 30,360 U.S. Government job opportunities worldwide, find the job in some country in Europe or somewhere, and move in ... If you like change you can stay there, if no, you can always come back with no problem ...

I wouldn't go so far as to call it a sinking ship but, when I went to the US I did find that I was either always attracted to the jazz clubs or the price of electronics, more so than the people.

I always find that smaller western areas (New Zealand, Western Australia or Tasmania) have "nicer" people in general. I'm also a big fan of parts of Asia (Japan, China), where it seems that being polite is part of the culture (although I am not personally a huge fan of the phillipines or taiwan).

I know a few US guys through forums or games, and theyre pretty nice and cool. But once I actually went there, I was fairly shocked at how different the people are.

Out of those three, I'd probably toss-up between England and Ireland. Depending on your age, England can be great, but there's just something about those sub-20 chavs that rubs me totally the wrong way. The Vicky Pollard kind of people... In fact, if I was moving to england, I'd probably take up residence in Wales.

In my experience, the irish are pretty friendly in general. All it takes to be taken as a local is be a nice bloke and come down to the pub.

Goodluck with your decision!

My fear of such a move is what I perceive as the rest of the world's opinion of Americans (not that it is unfounded, mind you). With "our" attitudes and sense of entitlement, why would the people of any other country want us there???

Have you read of the history of the Roman Empire? The parallels are remarkably striking, 'Bread & Circuses', erosion from the inside, and all that.

Don't worry about it. I have some American friends who lived all over the world and they never had any trouble within the EU. Just be respectful and avoid France or Italy if you like spray-on cheese because they WILL kill you for it

If we make it as long as Rome, that means we still have a few hundred years left.

As long as myself, my children, and my children's children are OK, so am I. To heck with my children's children's children.

LOL - Great Depression, World War II, Cold War, etc. The US has always been on a sinking ship, but we always manage to pull ourselves out of it, and we even manage to make democracies out of evil dictatorships that want to take over the world. By the way, your welcome for that

You could move to California, that's sorta like leaving the US

Yeah we will obviously look into jobs and visa when the time gets closer. Ireland would be my first choice, I am about 1/2-3/4 Irish and I swear Ireland calls to me . I know that Americans are not well received a lot and I understand why. I just worry how much of a problem that will become or if any.

This is exactly why people don't like the US. I can't even tell if you're being serious or not

the only real thing to remember if you move to another country is that your not in the US any more so dont expect everything to be the same. some things will be for the better and some you probably wont like (like the amount you will pay for everything and the tax levels)

btw if your going to "england" it would be a good idea to learn the difference between england scotland wales GB and the UK.

They are like states in the United States of Europe after the treaty of Lisbon. Right?
