The "basic" approach that I've taken for working with mains voltage is the same as I've taken for handling firearms.
1. Don't do something unless you are 100% sure of the consequences.
2. Don't deviate at all from your standard set of safety precautions (this is a big list which I'm sure has been covered already... it's good to have your own list.)
