Never bought from them.

Why risk getting one of the better clones when HMC sells genuine Hakko for a few dollars more?

I just picked one up at Fry's for $75

Yep. The regular price at Frys is now $74.99:

you can also get it at a fairly good price from allspec

I just ordered one from Cantonmade (ebay) today (before I found this thread).

Yes.. there is always a non-insignificant chance of receiving a knock-off when you order from "certain places" if you don't know better. But, being in Canada, it can be difficult to find this type of tool for a decent price (no Fry's). Anyway, I figured it was worth the risk. Especially with the reasonable shipping. Heck, I'm just getting into electronics soldering and have not used this level of gear before, so I might not even realize if it's a half decent fake.

Plus, the 10 extra included tips are nice for someone who's starting out. Unless of course they are shoddy knock-offs as well. :P

For casual, novice hobbiests in this area, such as myself, it would not be the end of the world, as long as the thing turns out to be usable.

I also cheaped out on all my soldering supplies by purchasing from dealextreme. < $9 for 1/2 Ibs of 0.6mm, 2% flux solder.

alot of the time knock offs are very close to being just as good being as there just clones of the original sometimes from the same factory that makes the real ones in china

Lol, I should have saved an extra $20 and gone with this one:

Fako #2

At least the one in the OP has Hakko actually written on it. A better counterfit, IMHO, and definitely worth the extra $$

not a bad deal. I might pick one up as a spare.

ever priced spare parts? the handle itself (heating element as well) is like that much, just for the part alone!

I'm pretty sure the pencil is compatible with the digital ayoue thing that I have (that pencil is not very good but the digital part is nice). I might just move the hakko pencil over to the display display, for that $75. then the trafo becomes a shelf-spare, in effect

I bought mine on Ebay from niosales:

HAKKO 936-12 SOLDER STATION WITH 4 EXTRA TIPS INCLUDED! - eBay (item 390003023270 end time Feb-16-10 12:09:25 PST)

For $99USD it came with 4 extra tips. I have no complaints with the product or service. It also appears to be the real unit and not a knock-off.

I wish we had Fry's in Florida, then again, perhaps my wallet is better off!

Oh sh##.

I just bought a hakko 936-12 from cantonmade too.  I did extensive search to find info about which soldering iron to buy and where.  It turns out, that I may have done a very poor choice...

joined this forum after...

How would one check if they are real?  Do we have to dissaemble to check the heating element?  If I find out they are fake, might try a dispute resolution in paypal or ebay.

Well you can leave a real Hakko on for 24 hrs straight at 800F without using it and it works like new.  A fake the thing will melt,  ask me how I know.

When I took apart the melted probe,  the design was unserviceable.  Bought a Hakko after that.  I think my fake one's name began with an A.
