no worries about the straight forward answer, i havent even bought the dt990/600's yet actually. i want to make sure that i know what im going to get for everything before i purchase. ok so since u say i need a desktop amp, do u have any in mind that would drive them properly? i thought maybe a little dot 1+, no? i thought about the LD mk2 too, but the shipping is just sooo much, so its a maybe on that one.

LD I+- no- Made for low impedance cans. I don't know about the MK2. I believe the MKIII would be good for you, from what I have read. I own the MKIVSE and it would be up for the task, however it is over your budget. Check the EF2 thread. I believe that may fit your needs.

You are not going to find a wonder dac with an amazing amp that will drive 600 ohm phones well for under $150. You are best of getting the musiland 02 as a DAC and it can also perform amp duties until you can afford a desktop amp to go with it.

hmm i see. im considering going with the 250 ohm version now that i realize i prolly wont get a amp/dac that will drive the 600 ohm version to potential. also, most of my music is not in super high quality flac or anything, so maybe the 250 ohm version will be more forgiving?

a few questions tho,

1. what are the main differences between the dt990 250 ohm and the 600 ohm? i tired to google and search for this myself but i couldnt find much.

2. would any of the amps/dac i listed be suitable/good for the 250ohm version?

might be the old 990s

DACs are for converting digital siginals into analog signals mainly not sure why u want to drive headphones with one.....get an AMP as well or stick to low impedence headphones.

I'm in a similar struggle. I have recently purchased the DT990 600 Ohm. I chose these over the 250 Ohm version because after audtioning them at a store I found the treble to be a bit too present and almost brittle. Reading the numerous reviews and opinions here, the 600 Ohm version seems to tame the treble to some extent (make it less harsh) So far the best combo I can think of is the Nuforce uDac-2 ($139) and the Little Dot MKII (145 +45 shipping). I think this may be my beset option as of now. I can't think of any cheaper DAC+tube amp combo that could drive the 600 Ohm headphones.

Those are my 2 cents, but I'm still looking for a better/potentially cheaper solution.
