How much current do these cables realistically carry? 50mA?100mA? 18AWG is just plain exageration and "moar is better" mentality...

That looks like a LEMO connector:
LEMO Connectors

When I worked in the audio industry as a pro, these devices all came with LEMO connectors:

Turning it into something much smaller than 18 gauge before it makes it to the pins would be my guess.

With a stranded wire, you can snip strands to pare the wire down to the size you need.

Yeah, it's similar, but it's made by ODU and isn't compatible with Lemos.

its not the lemo connector, its a variation on the ODU minisnap connector; guess it was OEM, I found the exact one in their catalogue, but at a glance its not there on the site. check them out though; some awesome stuff for our purposes; if only they were being put to use instead of some other connectors that seem to be becoming standard

No wonder their stock cable only uses something like 28 gauge wire. That's all you'd ever be able to get to fit in the pins' solder cups.

What a !@#$% joke!

I agree and they are a bit of a pain to work with, but I had success making DIY hp cables with 20AWG rectangular wires.

That said, they are probably some of the most awful connectors conceptually.

pcX has the HD-800 connectors for $40 (20% off sale) until the end of the month. The discount will be reflected after your order is placed.

need just one pair, figured out that i'm better off buying the whole stock cable, than spending 50+ just for the connectors... ah
