Good cans for big ol' ears?

Thread Starter
My ears are pretty big. It has been damn hard for me to find headphones that aren't super uncomfortable. In my experience, headphones that don't fit entirely around my ear make my ears really sore after a bit.

So, I am looking for a good set for using at my desk. I currently am using a set of Steel Series 5Hv2 for my gaming, but am looking for something for rocking out.

My wife is not a huge fan of my current desk set-up of NeuHaus Laboratories T-2 amp and Definitive Technology StudioMonitor 350 speakers, so the headphones will be plugged into the T-2 when she doesn't want to hear Viking Metal in the early morning.

I suppose I could spend ~300.

Holy crap ! You have a T-2 amp !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

never would i ever thought I'd be talking to a guy about the infamous "T-2"

IMO, ditch/sell the Steel Series and just get either BeyerDynamic Dt880/600 or Dt990/600.

Dt880 are well known for their gaming+superb crisp detail and phenomenal texture
Dt990 almost the same, but with more emphasis on the bass, more bass, more fun, excel nicely with rock/metal + very little to none impact on the mids.

both cans are preferably for big ears. I have medium to big type ears and i can use the beyers for days without feeling discomfort.

You might notice a little discomforting clamp factor and some warm ears after a couple hours usage, but give it a couple weeks and it automatically adjusts to your head.

dt880/600 - $304 on amazon
dt900/600 - $320 on amazon

you won't find them cheaper. good luck with whatever choice you make.

edit: it's your first post!!!!!!!!!!!!!. Forgot the good ole

DT880:

D2000:

K701:

For the K701: if your ears won't fit in that, you have major ear problems.

And you're VERY. VERY lucky to have that amp.
Happy hunting!

Not sure how well the K701s will handle Viking Metal though. Also, my friend has a larger head than me and said that the band on the 701s were a bit snug on his head. Just something to keep in mind as well!

Wow at that T-2!!!

Check out the Denon's mentioned above

I have pretty big ears, and the AT-M50s fit my ears just fine - although I wouldn't want them to be any smaller - I find them much more comfy than the AD900s - M50s are a steal at about $100 on ebay.

If its not too weird measure you ears, top to bottom, front to back, and I'll compare em to my ears to see if its a fit?

I also found the DT770s very comfy.

The DT770/880/990 velour earpads are fine, but the BeyerDynamica leather earpads are better, because they are wider.
The best headphone for big ears is the BeyerDynamica DT150.
The upper Denons will do too.

Another contender is the K601.

The Denon's would do you just fine. I own the 2000 and the cups are massive! They are also extremely comfortable. A tad loose but really comfy. I second the M50 also. The cup is almost as big as the Denon. They clamp more but not enough to make them uncomfortable.

I sure don't. I have been pondering them for quite some time. Do they make a big difference? I love their sound already.

The k701s are less hard on your ears than the denons or even the beyers, especially for big ears. they'll handle viking metal fine, it's just a question of tonal balance, since they have excellent detail and super-low distortion. Their bass is understated.

You think you've got problems?

Probably avoid the Audio Technica 'Air' (ADxxx) series - I had some issues with my ears touching the AD900s driver... ouchy... not the best for SQ either, having the ear so close to the driver IMO
