Looking for portable closed cans that sounds like open ones

I've been searching for portable headphones (no IEMs or buds) that will replicate the sound out of my Sennheisers (HD555, PX100) without leaking large volumes of sound.

- Closed
- Isolation not so important as just not leaking sound.
- Exceptional comfort is a must. I have medium sized ears, for reference, Bose QC2s are completely circumaural and stock JVC HA-RX700s were unbearably hot and painful after an hour. Both the Sennheisers are excellent comfort wise.
- <$100
- Folding is a plus

So far I'm looking at K81DJs, D1001Ks, ES7s, HD280. All across the brands, but each has something going against it, usually being comfort.

I think for your purposes I'd take the PX200-II over all of those. Comfort is still lacking compared to the PX100 but a good bit ahead of the K81, HD280, and ES7. D1001s are quite comfy but a little bulky/not folding. Plus they don't sound quite as airy as the PX200-II.

Same here, although it would be a close call vs the AH-D1001. In fact I'd probably go with the latter if foldability/collapsibility and size are not huge issues for you.

I know it's a long shot, but the sound doesn't have to be spot on with the open cans so long as it's still enjoyable.

Top contenders right now are definitely denon D1001 and the new PX-200 mk2. I read that the denons are supraaural for some people. Could someone measure the length and width of the cups, from one inside portion of the pad to the other?

Under $100 is a stretch!

Well, the Sennheiser HD280Pros have a great sound, but are probably the most uncomfortable headphones you'll ever come across. The Alessandro M50s and similar offerings from Beyerdynamic - the 150s (secondhand) would be worthwhile.

If your budget is that small, it makes sense to get a recently refurbished or secondhand set maybe?

The HD25IIs are great - you can get a small taster of these as the HD25SPs which you might pull for under $100 second hand). For just a little more, the HD25IIs rock. I got my Grado 125s for <$100 and its the best <$100 sound I've heard from open phones. But I'm not a huge open phone listener - they are my only set.

Having tried a few closed cans and the only one that actually sounds closed to an opened one is SRH840. Classical music sounds pretty good on those, and they are usually closed cans' biggest weakness. While they sound amazing out of my amp, they also don't sound that bad out of my 3gs. The clamp of those phones are not that tight so they are relatively comfortable and cool, but they weight a lot more than the SRH440s so those might be a better choice for you as the above posters have mentioned. I use the 840 as my portable headphones for bus rides and never really had any problem with sleeping with them on while busing.
