you can physically put a usb dongle in the back of someone's PC, to log keystrokes. most people never check back there, so it can send all sorts of goodies. it will never show up on a virus scanner, though anyone with a shred of computer literacy will notice the installed device

If a bad guy is able to get into your router or modem they can change the DNS servers that you use to point to a poisoned server. The poisoned DNS will send you to their server when you think you are actually going to paypal.

Slashdot actually has a story right now about a vulnerable D-Link home router. Other routers have been affected by bugs and vulnerabilities.

There are also DNS poisoning attacks that may affect the DNS server you use from your ISP.

But you still need a strong password, since once someone logs in to your account they can de-activate the security key. They should only allow deactivation by SMS message from your phone, but even that is not perfect since many providers allow you to do that from a web site (however you can tell the difference, so with care they could restrict de-activation only from someone who physically holds your phone).

I had something somewhat simillar happen (the jacking).

I got an email in my hotmail account from someone in, I think it was China, thanking me for the purchase of three prom dresses. I then noticed there were a few more emails thanking me for some purchases.

I thought WTH, and went to my paypal account. One of the sales had already gone through, so I hit panic mode and called my bank. I emptied the checking account I have tied to paypal and transferred my funds into a savings account.

I thought I was safe.

Then a few days later I noticed more money had been removed from my account. The reason: I had forgotten that I have overdraft protection for my checking account from, you guessed it, my savings account.

In the end paypal refunded all my money, then asked if I wanted one of their keys (secondary safety sign-on device).

Was not fun. Quite scary, actually.

Hope all turns out okay for ya.
