iPod Classic: line-out & EQ

From what I read from very few people, the line-out is supposed to bypass the EQ... right?
Because I have a LOD cable where the audio channel wires are soldered to FireWire Data pins or TBK pins according to Pinouts.ru.
Now, volume control doesn't work: I put the volume up and down and sound volume does not change (iPod -> this cable -> amp -> phones). However the EQ still works and still clips.
So is the iPod Classic supposed to have EQ from line-out or there's something wrong with the cable? I searched everywhere and cannot find anything related to the iPod Classic (160GB late 2009 version).

Well... which would mean that EQ is always functional, which means that the iPod EQ is applied digitally into/before the DAC, which sorta explains its crappyness.
Gee, someone should make the Wadia iTransport way smaller.
But could you explain the (seemingly wrong) wiring?
