wine storage - any recommendations? - Page 2

Haha, that's what we get for posting late at night!

OP, what's your budget?

Danby makes some nice higher end ones.

:-) wow, didn't see this one coming...

so, to clarify: wine chiller = one bottle device, wine cooler = small fridge with shelves for a dozen or more more bottles, to keep them at a stable temp. never thought about this being some kind of mixed drink. you live, you learn!

from googling around, I saw that there are options that approach the astronomical, but if I wanted that, I'd simply convert a room to be a "cellar". when I lived in NY I had a cool basement with a very stable temp. here in CA, there are temp swings and some wine will go bad.

so, in the meantime not only have I missed out on participating in this hilarious thread I inadvertently kicked off in the wrong direction (sorry people), but I also settled on a small cooler (fridge) for 16 bottles from the wine enthusiast website.

guess it's a bit like our audiophile hobby: having a dedicated room is best, making it work with the rooms you have can work, if you're constrained then headphones give you a music-space all your own. and that influences enjoyment - I guess if I wanted to stretch the analogy, I could say that as bad audio formats can ruin your audio experience, careless storage can ruin wine: I never used to worry about wine, but I just found myself with more decent wine that I see myself consuming in the coming two months or so, and that means storage.

okay, back to our regularly scheduled programming: working my way further through the 55 CDs in the "111 years of Deutsche Grammophon" box collection...

Of the people I know who have electric wine coolers, I don't know anyone who has had a particular problem. They mostly drink reds, so the refrigeration doesn't have to be that strong, just steady. I personally just stick my wine in a closet that doesn't have a wall shared with the outside, but since it looks like you live in Cali you probably need something better unless you have a cellar or something.

I'd recommend checking out some of the more reputable wine sites and see if they have reviews or recommendations. If you still have problems, I can see what kind of wine refrigerator we have for our wine samples. It's about the size of small refrigerator, so it might be bigger than you need. I've seen some neat ones that are only a little bigger than a microwave.

My apologies for contributing to the way this thread went completely off the rails.

I don't drink wine, so, all i can say is good luck.

Lol @ replies. That was a fun read. Anyway, I've done some experimenting with Wine Coolers, atleast in the lower end of the price range. The Cuisinart ones are the only ones that are atleast decent, the Haier ones are terrible and even the Cuisinart ones have some very mixed reviews. The good ones are pretty expensive and need some room, and I decided not to bother with one for now. But I hear good things about Vinotemp, so I might get one later.

I have a built in version with a wood front to match the kitchen cabinets, but this is a great wine storage solution...

Most fridges keep food at 38 degrees which is way too cold for wine. Around 55 is ideal.
