Hifiman HM-801, or s:flo2 + D10?

Hello,

I've got an HM-801 on order, along with an s:flo2. I already have the iBasso D10 which I'm using to drive my UM3X on my portable rig. I'm trying to figure out whether the sound quality of the HM-801 would be *that* much better compared to the sflo+d10. Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance!

EDIT: I should say that I'm mostly looking to play FLAC. I know the sflo is capable of video and photos, but that's all secondary and doesn't matter to me. I mostly listen to classical, jazz, some trip-hop and lounge.

Can't comment on the s:flo2 but the HM-801 I tried certainly was better sounding than my RockBoxed H-140 feeding optical into a D10.

UM3X is a very sensive phones I don't know the if they have improve the hiss issue with the latest batch of products. Before make decision, you can consult to them with the pairing.

That is a very good point. I didn't have my UM3x when I tried the HM-801 but they do hiss some with my D10 but that could at least partly be down to the chip set I use.

Hi,

If you're referring to using a different opamp with the D10, I can't comment. I use the stock setup on the D10 and there's no hiss with the UM3X.

So you're saying there may be some very noticeable hiss matching the UM3X with the HM-801, and I may be better off staying with an s:flo2 and the D10?

As I wrote I didn't have the UM3x when I had the HM-801 so can't say, but the UM3x will certainly pick up the hiss if it is there, they were unusable with an AMP3 pro2 for that reason and are borderline with the opamp I have in my D10 (not stock).

I owned a Rockboxed H120 + D10, and currently own an HM-801. I have used both with my JH13's, which are plenty sensitive.

Neither produces any hiss at all, even when cranked to max.

As for which will sound better... won't you be able to find this out for yourself soon enough?

Yes, I guess I will. I was just wondering if the sound quality of the HM-801 is significantly higher than the s:flo2+D10 combo... if it's better, but not by a whole lot, it may not make sense to get the HM-801 and I could cancel my preorder. It's really a matter of source device overlap, and not a financial consideration at this point.
