Mariah Carey or Madonna: Better voice?

Your thread topic is who has a better voice but then you ask who is a better singer.

Mariah has a better voice but Madonna is a better singer.

Madonna has progressed from the early processing of her voice, but Mariah is a natural singer. Though I think Madonna is the better entertainer.

Right on. Most people fail to make this distinction, but there is a difference between having a great voice, and knowing how to use it. As gifted as Mariah Carey is, I'm not a fan of her indulgent, caution to the wind vocal antics. On the other hand, I appreciate the arguably less impressive voices of Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday because they are crafted in a more tasteful fashion. Oddly enough, I'm only 22, so it would seem more reasonable for me to prefer the style that I have had the most exposure to. Nevertheless, there is something so honest and pure about those early jazz recordings that moves me more than Mariah Carey's or Christina Aguilera's vocal fireworks ever could.

I would have to say Mariah Carey. Her singing never seems strained with her immense dynamic range. To me shes definately a better singer. But that would apply to the older Mariah Carey material. The newer stuff doesn't sound at all as fluent.

I will have to agree to that

Madonna is a very smart entrepreneur, she has made the most out of what she has, something similar to Elle MacPherson.

Better voice -> Mariah Carey
Better singer -> Madonna
