Disappointment

Have you ever heard a song on the radio and thought "hey that's a cool song" and then gotten it on CD or on download and discovered that it was recorded very poorly? Here's a couple of my examples:

- MGMT, Time to Pretend: sounds very brittle and irritating
- The Killers, Mr. Brightside: very distorted (possibly intentional but still stills sounds like crap)

Have you experienced this?

YES!

That's why I remaster almost everything I buy.

The radio is the greatest disappointment of my listening career. Anything I've heard on radio is worse than most things I've ever heard or owned on CD

It's not the radio. It's the poor mastering that's done on CD's these days. With the dynamics squashed and poor EQ choices, it's not a huge surprise that most modern day releases suck. Mastering is very important!

This is the reason why I only buy albums I have heard or downloaded before.

Do it right or dont do it at all. I'd much rather a very dry, raw recording with nothing done to it because its easier to fix and in some cases sounds perfectly fine

Oh yeah!
That is why I now tend to perform some more research before shelling out for the album.

I know it's basically beating a dead horse but check out Metallica's Death Magnetic...
