Neutrix locking Jack, grounds thru case

Anyone else notice that the neutrix locking jack everyone uses grounds the signal ground thru the case? Makes it tough to star ground.

I haven't handled one, but from the Neutrik site:

Quote:
Closable grounding options: standard isolated, to get a sleeve/panel connection red isolator on lateral screw must be removed
so it seems like it is supposed to be isolated.

Correct. I have one right in front of me. The screw that ties in to the ground lug has a red isolating washer on it. With the washer on, which is how it came stock, there's no electrical connection to the metal housing. Just verified it with my meter.

A balanced amplifier has no signal ground. Putting two single ended amps back to back makes a bridged amplifier, not necessarilly a balanced one. Now, balanced amps need a signal reference, and many people use "ground" for this, but this reference should not be shared between components through your connector -- defeats the whole point of balancing. Pin 1 on an XLR is earth/chassis ground.

Some Neutriks have pin 1 connected to the case, others don't -- check the datasheets.

Hey Doug!

I believe he was referring to Neutrik's locking TRS jack, not XLR.

Ah, my red washer was warped and the screw was contacting the body.

Thanks.

I happen to like the unique ugliness of them.
