I have the HD650 and K701 as a 'pair'. They are very different in presentation. My preference is the K701 since it has such a huge soundstage and a 'shinier' top end. I love the K701 with (would you believe), a cheap Bravo tube amplifier. I also use the X-Can V2 and V8 with both. The V8 seems to be a good match with the Senn HD650 which gives more bass weight in comparison to the K701 but a more closed in feeling in the top.

In between these two, there is the Senn HD600. Not quite as bassy as the 650 and not as toppy as the K701. I occasionally use this one for a middle of the road listen.

My own preference is the K701 since it allows me to listen at low levels with real clarity. The Senns seem to take off at louder volumes.

However, the K701 is like Marmite - you either like it or hate it. It's best to listen first since it will point out every flaw in your system like a razor blade. They are also very difficult to drive in comparison to other headphones.

The Senn HD600 is a safe one. Good middle of the road sound.

I never got on so well with the Beyers and sold them on. They lacked something in the bass for me, although they are supposed to be a very good flattish response headphone. I got on with the K701's better.

Ideally, get them all!!

Have to agree that the 701 is harder to drive than 650. For me that was just another way in which I preferred the 650.

The X-Cans and Bravo drive the K701 without much fuss.

I also think the K701 is like Marmite - you either take to it or don't. I have an in line adapter on my HD650's now which lightens the sound up a little for me. Interestingly, they are about the same to drive as my K701 with the adapter on.

It's very handy if you like the Sennheiser sound but would like a little more lightness (airiness) to its sound.

iancraig10,

Among the ones currently available, which of the versions should I get? Which one is practically already optimized?
