Well, he needs to stop posting the various ways to say "HFI-780s are bad headphones" and realize they are great headphones for people that like them. I realize it takes some guts to say headphones that one does not enjoy, are rather good headphones for people that love them.

I said this well before you posted:

This thread IS NOT for people who are happy with their headphones. If you are happy with the 780, I am happy for you. Enjoy them and relax.
I believe I am well within my right to state that I think they are god awful contraptions and I would rather kick a baby while skinning a cat then listen to them. I provided a track by track breakdown as to why. Obviously this is my opinion, and obviously, in my mind it is right.

I wont make a statement with regards to comparisons between the "ALO-780" and the SHR 840 as I have not heard the 'modified' version. ALO audio is a very touchy subject for some (cough custom USB cables ROFL cough), and I will leave it at that. However, a poster mentioned paying $350 dollars for a pair used, new they are like $600 or something crazy. The 840 can supposedly be had for $134 new and $120 used. Going up to $350 for used headphones can get you a pretty decent set of cans from the FS/FT forums. For instance, I have seen the HD600 for around $250 used and the ATH AD2000 for $350. I think those, and others, would be a more apt comparison.

I needed a closed back headphone for hip hop and such whose total cost was around $200.00. I read numerous threads and ended up buying the two most popular suggestions. I then actively compared the two and got rid of the one I didn't like. As a result, I am "shure" of my decesion and do not go around second guessing myself. I thought I would share my experience. I believe I am well within my right to do so.

I apologize if I came out to strong. I guess I am very sensitive to kinds of wordings and the intentions of those wordings. Everyone has the right to their opinion. I guess I'm not a big fan of appreciation threads or "hating" threads. Let it be what it is. That's what multiple sources are for when doing research.

I'm curious to how the 840s sound after having the Ultrasones for a bit. If you want something that is kind of a mix between the Ultrasones (in their bass reproduction, and not their shrill highs) and the Shures, give the SRH750DJ a go. Again, I have not listened to the 840s, but those SRH750DJs seem to have what you may be looking for.

No worries.

Have you heard the srh750dj and the srh840 side by side? If the answer is no (and you have indicated as much) why would you recommend something. The SRH840s have everything I was looking for. Closed. Sub $200 price tag. Do not require a super amp. Do not make my ears bleed or sound like someone is tapping on the outside of the headphone to reproduce base.

I appreciate your suggestion, but why? I think it should be obvious that I am perfectly happy with the 840s. They reproduce music with some extended bass and, while far from perfect, are a great deal. I would one day like a pair of HD650s, but wouldn't want them without at least something like a gilmore lite. I would also need my own office.

Came out a bit strong. Like you knew the truth and the truth was they was garbage... Those who enjoy it are just justifying their purchases and are not really enjoying them hence the need for this review

As for ultrasone house sound what is that? I have the 900/ED 8 and it´s as big difference as from 900/K701 or ED 8 and HD 650 for example... Not much of a house sound here.

The 840 really are a wonderful can. They surprised me really. Like many others have said, the HFi 780 really benefit from a recable, or even the full ALO mod. For the money though, I think the Shures are a better buy than a stock HFI 780.

I had the 840's as well and couldn't stand them much beacuse of their total neutralness to my ears, which isn't a fault as that's how they were designed. I much prefer my Pro900, albeit being a superior model to the 780 and a 'proffesional' model they're anything but flat and balanced. The U sound is everpresent as is the sibliance and rather piercing highs. So I did the Kees mod and added some dynamat layer to the inside of the cups (blu-tak can be used as well with a similiar result) and found it greatly helpful in that is brought the mids forward noticably, nearly-tamed the highs and the sibliance is gone. They're still unmistakebly cold and analytical but the U sound became more balanced and more refiend to the point where i have a hard time deciding between them and my W5000 for keeping me company. I suggest maybe you try that with the 780's and give them a second chance.

If people like the Ultrasone sound but think that the 780's is a bit to extreme, then it might be a better idea to get the 680's from what I gather they are not a downgrade from the 780's but a sidegrade with a more neutral sound signature.

Yup, get the HFI-680 or just go for the ALO-780/PRO 900. Then if you love the sound sig, just go straight to the ED9 or ED8. I was going to get the ED9 from ebay a couple of weeks ago. Funny how no head-fiers got it. It got no bids on it and starting bid was $750 almost brand new, yes, $750! Never got re-listed. I guess some people missed out on a fantastic deal.

What a bunch of horse****; at least you got most of your handle right. The reason people "quietly sell their 780s" is because THIS IS AN AUDIOPHILE FORUM AND PEOPLE LIKE TO TRY DIFFERENT STUFF. Also most people do so "quietly" because they don't feel the need to pound their chest and use titillating words like "abortion" to tell the community "these aren't for me."

Great review, I completely agree with you. I used the 780 for a 2-3 months before I realized what you did. Even my much-cheaper ATH-A700 sounds better than they do on every level. IIRC, the 840 is also a great headphone from the short listening session I had at RMAF.
