I get 1/2" 3 to 1 heatshrink from heatshrinktubing1 on ebay or wirecare.com as my all purpose shrink for cable making. For smaller wires, however, you may want to move to 1/4". 3 to 1 is fairly stiff so if you want flexibility, using 2 to 1 might be better. You need to determine what works best for you, especially from a sizing standpoint. If you get too large a diameter, it won't do you much good, and if you get too small, you won't be able to fit it over anything.

To be honest I get a lot of DIY stuff from dealextreme. They have heatshrink and it's cheap and works. Ditto for solder, flux, etc.

if you need it at once, any home improvement super store, hardware store, or automotive parts chain and radioshack. this stuff is hardly scarce. hd has 3/16 to 2" and almost every size in between. 2:1 and 3:1. 6" strips. i am sure there is better quality but i think the stuff sold everywhere is fine for most applications. a electronics supply will have colors other than black, shiny, mat etc. by the foot.
