Seattle/Portland" Meet in the Middle" - Page 9

I have a question nagging at me. I'm new to head-fi. I've aquired some nice phones since Nov 09 (rs1i, DT880/600, D5000, gr8 IEM), as well as ibasso D4 and T3 portable amps. However, as I use my desktop computer as my primary source I don't have much in the way of a source to bring. All I can really bring is my little Sony mp3 player, T3, and D4, and GR8s. My brother wants to come with me as well, but has the same concerns. Will we be looked down upon for not showing up with sufficient gear? This would be our first meet and it sounds like fun.

I know a lot of head-fiers have been wondering about the Grado GR8 IEMs though. Perhaps those and the ibasso amps would be enough?

Anyways...just wondering.

EDIT: I'm still waiting for my MAD Ear+ HD custom to be built and it won't be done in time.

You're kidding, right?

And anyway, I think many/most of us will be traveling a little lighter than normal. ("Normal" having gotten a little out of hand, as it is.)

Are you down for the ridepool/caravan out of Delta Park?

Twist my arm a little...OK I'm sold.

@dongringo - Honestly I (and few others in the thread) have had that same hesitancy about our gear, but the more I think about it, the more I'm reminded of something my dad told me when I left for college. He told me no matter how smart I am, there's going to be someone out there that makes me look stupid. Taking that idea to audio, with a few notable exceptions most of us will eventually run into someone whose inventory just destroys. OK, I'm stretching here, but it's Friday, my brain is pretty fried from the week, and all I can really think about right now is that pint that is calling my name at the pub in an hour or so.

And it's one thing when people say "I've only got a set of PortaPro's..." But to rattle off a list of several cans, each of which is worth more than my entire inventory...

I'm interested in the GR8's. Never got around to trying them out at KB's.

We all started out somewhere, probably with not that much gear. Were happy to have anybody attend . New people help keep this hobby a float. There the next generation.

I have two Ipod videos, 4 shuffle, 1 sansa clip, 3 cd players, and two laptops. let's just say that there will be plenty of sources to share.

I don't know about you but when I come to a meet, I "Don't Leave Home Without It". It will at least be in the car. Everthing down to my soldering station and DIY stuff.

welcome! i'm new here as well, though i've been lurking for quite some time. i'm at the very shallow end of this spending habit, and i am doing my VERY BEST not to drop any cash until after the meet. i have very, very little to contribute (my senn hd555 and an indeed tube amp), but hi-fi meets are about listening to and sharing gear and experiences, so it's perfectly fine to show up empty-handed - that's likely what i'll be doing. that said... i personally would love to check out the dt880 and d5000, as well as both of the port amps. you definitely have gear to contribute, imho.

also, there's no shame in not bringing a full setup - some people bring their own sources, so cans and amps are more than sufficient.

and, as i think others have stated, there will be a ride share going on in portland.

I will be traveling very light - the PDX crew will most likely find that hard to believe but it will be just me, and a portable set up..dB

Thanks to everyone who had kind words to say. Having never been to a meet before, I think we had a legitimate concern. I was mostly worried about not having a source to plug into, but I guess if someone wants to hear what we have, we can always plug into someone else's source.

@ Andrew H - We won't be down with carpooling because we plan to get a hotel room to get away for the weekend. Looking foward to it.

Donringo,
I'm staying Friday and Saturday at the Holiday Inn Express in Chahelis. There are cheaper hotels in Centralia, but thier reviews were poor and Mcmenimens had nothing.
There's a Bed and Breakfast right near the Libray called the Candlelight Mansion, but I never called them.

Thanks. I'm looking into it...really not picky at all. It's funny, I'll spend every last dime for a nice pair of headphones, but go totally cheap on a hotel. Priorities
