Indeed.
Saw pics today.

I don't often find cash for charity, but I think I'm going to dig deep for the Red Cross today. This is a terrible situation, and it's going to get worse in the next few days. I heard a CBC reporter predict that when the dust settles this is going to be acknowledged as the worst humanitarian disaster the Western Hemisphere has ever seen.

Horrible. I'll be looking into suitable charities shortly.

I saw it on the news. Absolutely horrible. My thoughts go out to all people who were hit.

Is there a way that Jude could set up a fund so that members of Head-fi give to Jude who in turn forwards the entire collection to a suitable charity on behalf of Head-fi.org and it's members?

I saw the news about it this morning. I may have to dig around and find some money to donate too.

EDIT - Texted to donate $10 to the Red Cross. It's not much, but it's at least something I can do right away.

I emailed Jude to see if we can do something as a collective

hmmm am i the only one who has rather a lot of disdain for this sort of thing. haiti is a state with a vast amount of problems and day today most people dont give a crap about the suffering and misery that takes place there and all over the world but oooooh the ground shakes and suddenly "oh no those poor dears oh how we must rush to help!!!"

now im not saying you all dont do what you can all the time, id never make that kind of judgement call on others. im just expressing my disdain for the world at large for falling over itself to help when they couldnt care less yesterday

Or maybe it just takes a more visible/media-worthy catastrophe to make us open our eyes.

I agree with you on a global level to some extent, I personally do not fall within that category and have been a volunteer my entire life. If I could afford it I would be on the next plane there to help out in any way I could. of course, I would also love to go to Darfur, Indonesia after the tsunami and up north to stop the seal hunt, but none of these are realistic so I do what I can with what I can.

but why not take advantage of the people you speak of? there money is as good as the most dedicated person in the world. and the victims need all the money and support they can get right now. sure there was 2 million people living in an area designed for 50,000 with poor infrastructure on a good day but none of that matters right now. what matters is helping parents find their children and helping them get water and supplies and everything that is now gone from them.

Mark2410, Yes most of your words might or could be somewhat true, and you're entitled to your opinion BUT Do YOU think it might come or become a way of life for such a underpriviledged group of people??? They've had nothing for so long!!! My church has a missonary (Catholic) there and I've seen Films of the lifestyle most HAVE TO LIVE IN....very sad....I'll pray for the survivors!

In a natural disaster, suffering of such magnitude draws the human response of compassion. Everything else is politics.

Sink a few hundred million into Haiti now and there's a good chance you'll save hundreds of thousands of lives from the otherwise inevitable societal collapse. Do the same at any other time and you might as well be pissing into the wind for all the good it'll do you.

Some problems just can't be solved at acceptable costs. Others can. Welcome to the real world.

Agree, and well said. Not that we shouldn't help now, but we also have to be aware on a day-to-day level of the kinds of structural economic and social problems that are keeping the people in such abject poverty to begin with, which cuts down on resources that could have been available to help more people right away, that might have led to better buildings that wouldn't have collapsed and killed so many people, etc.

The c.atholic c.hurch for example has appropriated a lot of the agricultural land in Haiti, when more affluent people die they also leave land to the church because they have been brainwashed to think it will "safeguard their souls," etc. and together with a complicit government they keep the people in poverty basically to use them as slave labor in the fields. So hate to say it but it's another case of catholic/christian colonial imperialism at the root of the problem that has to go so the people can reclaim their land with meaningful land reform and get out of the grip of poverty these big political organizations have them in.
