ATH-CKS70 vs. Futuresonics Atrio m5

Okay, so GEEZ! It took about three days for this account to be approved. I've been doing a lot of IEM research here on head-fi and elsewhere. And I'm coming to the final destination of my first serious IEM purchase.

I'm looking for bass - I listen to a lot of drum and bass, dub step, etc. I Listen to all styles of music, though, including jazz, classical, jam bands, alternative, classic rock, and so on. Okay, so I've narrowed my choices down quite a bit. The final two phones I'm looking at are the Atrio m5 and the ATH-CKS70. I can get the former, used for about 100 dollars, maybe more, and the latter for about 65 dollars. As an additional consideration, I'll be using these headphones for both use in the home as well as at the gym.

What I'm really looking for is someone who has heard both, and can give me an answer as to whether one is more worthwhile. This is not necessary, of course.

As a side note, I was also considering these
Senn CX95
Sennheiser CX95 Style Earphone - eBay (item 190363456749 end time Jan-17-10 09:48:39 PST)

Dr Dre Beats on Tour
New Monster Beats by Dr. Dre In-Ear Tour Headphones - eBay (item 170422949136 end time Jan-20-10 10:51:44 PST)

but was afraid that I would be purchasing fakes. I may just go with those, for the price, if anyone can affirm authenticity at some level

THANKS SO MUCH

I'm not sure about the Senn, but the Monsters...that's way below retail price... well when something is too good to be true you know something outta be wrong. And there are many counterfeit Senns on the Internet. So you've been warned about eBay purchases.

I can not comment on anything but the CKS70, they have HUGE bass with what I would call a similar detail to what most IEM strive for in the midrange or treble and they have the biggest sound stage I have heard in an IEM so far it is supposed to be almost as big as the IE8. The treble on the other hand is quite recessed and the midrange is warm but nice to listen to. They are also extremely comfortable to wear. They don't have much in the way of accessories though and hang down so I am not sure they would be that great in the gym.

Thanks so much for the responses. Are there counterfeit CKS70's? Because the ones I'm looking at have some sort of asian packaging, but I'm familiar with the fact that they are produced in either Japan or China.

They are made in Japan. I bought mine from accessoryjack.com and they were original. I think their price point being low and their newness = no fakes (yet).

Ah, okay, thanks. I wasn't aware of how new they were. Still hung up on whether to get the Atrio m5's. I am a little apprehensive because, when I was looking around at comments here on head-fi someone said not to work out with them in a brief statement, and I do a bit of cardio. Does anybody know of the authenticity of this comment? I kind of lost the thread in a massive amount of tabs concerning phones research

I don't like working out in my IEMs. I tend to kill them that way.

I love my Atrios. They're bass is more rich than boomy, more quantity than quality. They don't have that cottonheaded fuzziness that a lot of bass phones get when dealing with an actual musical performance.

What is your source? If it's something like a Sony player, then the CKS70 is not a bad recommendation because it responds well to EQing, and most of its faults in terms of sound can be fixed via a flexible EQ. Toning down the mid bass hump and increasing the treble and mids will balance out the phone.

If you are using an iPod though, I really do not recommend the CKS70, because there is no EQ settings, and using an EQ like 'treble booster' will just cause sibilance.

It kills them? How do you mean? They start to exhibit problems, they just stop working completely? Or do you mean they fall out or you step on the cord and actually physically damage them yourself? I love the IEM interface, but if I invest some money into some I don't want to kill them in any way!

I am using an Ipod Shuffle 1st Gen. Haha. It is funny. And what's even funnier is that it's stuck in shuffle mode which aggravated me to no end, since I listen to drum n bass mixes, so I can't listen in order unless it's a single track.

I will be using them on my PC as well, of course, but I am going to be getting a new source fairly soon. coughtaxcheckscough

So, I'm pretty confident in these Atrios, I think I will invest in them
