Power switches for portable headphone amps

Are there any major benefits to having the power switch on the volume pot?

I can't find many in the UK. Would having a normal switch cause power surges if headphones are/aren't plugged in or the volume is up loud?

Benefits are one less panel mounted component, and as you indicate, the volume has to be turned down to turn it off, so will be very low when turned on.

Drawbacks of a panel mounted switch are larger turn on transients if you leave the volume turned up/phones plugged in, etc. Toggle switches are normally used, so these can get snagged, be actuated in your pocket... lots of potential drawbacks.

Having the switch in the pot limits your selection of potentiometers to choose from.

Do you have any suggestions for volume pots with power switch on for desktop amp?

Cheers guys.

Punnisher: Found that one out the hard way.

Pars: Never even thought about that. Might have a look to see if there are any decent slide switches about.

Pila405: I was on the lookout for the pot used on the cmoybb, but it's proving hard to track down, well at least the one with the switch on anyway.
