Buying FOTM in the 'heat of the moment" - Page 2

Sansa Fuze and Head-Direct RE0, both of which I still use and love.

RSA Tomahawk. No regrets.
That is afaik the only FOTM unit I have bought.

I bought the IE8s when they were just becoming popular. I still regret letting my pair go.

Cowon D2 - liked the chunk of the thing, but never ever liked the sound which was far too compressed.

SRH840. I pretty much bought it as soon it was released, assuming it'll be like my SE530's. I've sold it since, and while I still think it's a fantastic headphone overall I couldn't live with its recessed mids (especially lower mids) that didn't sound ANYTHING like the 530 mids.

Audeo PFE and NuForce uDac. Very happy with both!

I accidentally bought some triple.fi's the other day I'm looking forward to comparing them to the SE530's but I still am not sure why I bought them.

I must be quite the FOTM sinner here:

Little Dot MKV: Didn't go well with my K701s at the time so was a poor choice.
Zero DAC: Flavour of the year, not just month. Quite musical, easily upgraded for better SQ, and I learned from it, but assembly was a bit iffy. No regrets.
Compass: Yeah, you can blame me for that. I was honestly trying to fix the drama over the Zero and dud units/peoples' headphones being destroyed and whatnot and it became a drama in itself.
Lavry DA-10: Not quite FOTM, but close, when along with the Benchmark DAC 1 it was one of THE DACs to own. Too digital-sounding for me and needs dedicated RCA output, but is still a good unit.
Northstar M192 MK1: Not quite FOTM either, but still had a burst of popularity, as it was selling for <$1k when it was $2.5k new, and had talk of having an analogue-like sound which I think gave us glazed eyes. Not quite as natural-sounding as claimed and only marginally better than the Lavry.
HD-800: It's all Jude's fault. I don't regret them as I can still put them on and not feel I'm missing anything (except a nice tube amp to power them).
HF-2: Just put them on again now, as they haven't had any playing time recently. Still quite fun, but so are my Stax, which are more resolving. I don't regret buying them because I knew at least I can get my money back in the future if I they don't work out.
HE-5: I'm glad I had the chance to experience orthos of some description. Neither happy nor regret buying them, I just have too many really good headphones I enjoy listening with now.

HE-5: Still quite happy with it after half a month of listening. I purchased an EF5 as well, although that didn't quite gain enough popularity to reach FOTM.

SRH840: They don't get much use, but come spring, summer and fall while I travel to my cottage, they'll come in handy once again.

SE-L40: Not really FOTM, but there had recently been a few "Sexiest 'phone" threads going on and when I had looked around on eBay, I found that a few had sold for $200+ within the two weeks I was peaking around for them. After which I got a mint pair for $50, so I guess it was more like a recurring FOTM.

Yuin PK3 earbuds. Happier than a plastic surgeon in Beverly Hills. Just wished I could find a more refined full sized headphone with that ratio of bass to mids to highs.

Pk3's.. they broke after like a month and a half of very mild use.

I bought a Trends TA-10 amp when it was FOTM (perhaps FOTY is more accurate) and I'm still impressed with how good this thing sounds. Likewise, I pre-ordered a Cambridge Audio DACMagic as soon as I saw it had the specs I was looking for and I've been quite pleased with it.

just bought a uDAC which is still on its way...

the only other thing i bought that might be considered FOTM was my koss ksc-75's which at the time were being billed as cheap way to get a taste of grado sr-60 sound. when i think about it now, they might still be getting praise if they're still widely available. still haven't demoed any grados so i don't know about that... anyways, no regrets with this in the 3 years or so that i've had them as they kind of complement my hd280's sound and make great portable phones (especially if you don't want headphone hair like my hd280's give me, haha). only thing is my old iriver didn't make them sound good unless i had my cmoy amp to make them sound a little warmer. i need to use eq for them in foobar out of my netbook and i'm hoping to hear some kind of improvement with the uDAC but now i realize some of the clipping or distortion or whatever may be a result of foobar's crappy eq so we'll see...
