I guess this is stupid question but I can use my HD650 single ended until I make them balanced? also anybody tried amping D5000?

Yes of course there are balanced and SE headphone outputs so you would be fine

Just received my MKVII+ today and seem to be having an issue. Not with the MKVII+ apparently but with my DAC I. The DAC I is not ouputting a signal on the balanced outputs? Is there anything one needs to do special to get the LD DAC I to output balanced? I have checked the MKVII+ with another balanced source and it worked fine?

They're completely different lineups for different purposes.

DL3 > balanced > Phonitor > SE > HD800 -- this lineup gives me the most neutral presentation. For me, "neutral" isn't the same as bloodless. It simply means that the rig is extremely accurate in presenting the recorded music. And a good rig will bring out all the beauty and quality that's captured in the recording. In terms of dynamics, it clearly reproduces fine details in the softest, quietest passages. So it's like actually being there, hearing the performance in person under pristine listening conditions.

DAC_1 >balanced> MK VII+ >balanced> HD650 -- this lineup is for fun, for pure non-analytical enjoyment. It's warm, lyrical, alive. IIRC, the VII+ is advertised as a "neutral" amp, but to my ears, the bass is slightly enhanced. But this is probably only because I'm comparing it with the Phonitor lineup above.

With each, using proper volume, there's little or no fatigue, which usually means excellent balanced presentation.

For enjoyment and relaxation, I find myself turning to the LD-HD650 setup.

I haven't tried the LDs with other cans, but I will eventually. Right now, I just want to kick back and enjoy them in balanced mode with the HD650.

ADDED a few minutes later: Oops. Forgot to answer the HD800 part of your question. The HD800 in both lineups: it doesn't sync as well as the HD650 in the LD lineup.

1. Are you getting a clean signal from the SE out? If yes, then the balanced out is probably defective.

2. If you're not getting a signal from both SE and balanced, then try the function and input buttons on the DAC_1.

3. Alternately, check the DAC_1 with a different amp.

ADDED: 4. I'm assuming you're using balanced XLR interconnects between the DAC and amp.

Yes,
SE out on the DAC I works fine. Balanced out = no sound
Yes using balanced interconnects aready confirmed good in another setup.
I tried usb and optical inputs which work fine in SE, but not in balanced.
I have already sent David an email @ Little Dot.

Anyone have a link to the MKVII+ manual or information on the jumper settings on the bottom of the unit? The manual I got was in Chinese. In single ended I am listening @ 11 to 12 o'clock which I think is too high? Definitely sounds different from the MKIII in single ended, but too early for me to say anything.

All four are in the "on" position in my unit. I'm in the U.S., with 120V.

With my cans, no, in SE 11:00 isn't high. But in balanced, 9-9:30 seems about right.

Is this correct so far?

1. DAC_1 has been tested and is working OK.

2. Balanced XLR into VII+: SE 'phone jack OK but balanced jack not working.

3. RCA into VII+: both SE and balanced 'phone jacks are OK.

If yes, then the balanced XLR inputs on the VII+ are the problem.

You've tested the XLR interconnects on another setup, and they are OK, correct?

The MKVII+ does not have an input switch on the back! The problem seems to be the balanced output on the DAC_I?

I just ordered the MKVII+, as I have no concerns over their quality. I think they are a stand up company, and enjoy their DAC_1 very much!

I am about ready to order one of these, but this gives me reason to pause. If this unit is defective, then what do they do to "test" them before sending them out?

I am not jumping to conclusions, as we are still unsure of the actual issue at hand here. To be fair to LD, I am simply asking this question, IF it has arrived with faulty xlr inputs. My understanding is that there is a specific time allotted for the amps to be tested before shipping out. Well then, what do they test, and how, is my question. I also understand the nature of electronics, and even with the best of QC, there are issues that arise.

So, we'll have to wait and see how this turns out.

(Please don't flame me for simply asking this question, I am not trying to antagonize anyone.)
