Best Closed Phones with Isolation for Ipod

Thread Starter
Hi guys, I am really new to this. Looking for a starter pair of headphones.

I'm in college and have the worst time studying if I can't cover up everything in the background (usually with classical music at a low volume).

I'm looking to buy some headphones that have a high amount of isolation and are as decent as can be for under $100.

If I won't be using them with IPOD I'll be using them with soundcard output on my computer.

I need something that's comfy so I can muffle out my roommates playing Counterstrike for hours as I'm trying to study. I have somewhat large ears too.

Let me know what you think

Thanks!

welcome to head-fi chinoblanco. what are you some kind of white, chinese, mexican? just curious. some sennheiser hd280s might work for you. i've never heard them but they sound like what you might be looking for. you should do a search and find out more.

i have the same problems. planning on buying shure e2's or maybe sennheiser px-200's. both are very highly viewed on this forum and offer great isolation on top of great sound quality. this is how i figure: if you want complete isolation then the e2's over px200's. if you want comfort and a moderate amount of isolation, then px200's over the e2's. i'm probably getting the e2's, but i'm still not sure. shure's go for around $70 and sennheiser's for around $45.

ps: go the headphone forum on this site, find the little search engine they got on the bottom, and search posts for those two headphones. you'll find a lot of good stuff about em.

I have the Senn PX200s, and I highly recommend them assuming you're comfortable with the following two characteristics: a) They're extremely placement sensitive. If you don't get them exactly on the sweet spot of your ear, all the bass just disappears. b) They have an extremely small sound-stage. The closed design is great for when you're moving around, but when you're still, in a quiet area, you might feel like the sound is coming from inside your head (at high volumes, expect a headache). c) They NEED to be "broken/burned" in. The day you get them, hook up to a line out or something and leave them for a couple hours. The sound is extremely stiff and narrow right out of the box, and this just doesn't do the phones credit. Break 'em in first.

I don't think the PX-200s have a comfort edge over the E2s. They tend to leave your ears a little sore after hours of use.

BUT... having said that, I have found no better closed, highly portable, amp-less cans for classical music. They do have a limited soundstage, but you can't expect much better out of closed cans with such small drivers.

The 280-Pros are also excellent when it comes to classical music. Superior to the PX-200s in detail and soundstage and resolution (and blocking outside noise!) in my opinion. But they are unweildy for portable use, and the extreme dynamics of classical music suffers without an amp from them. Neither of these may be a problem for you if you are mainly looking for something to use in the dorm room and a low levels.

I think you can't go wrong with either choice, especially for classical music.

Hey ChinoBlanco.

Welcome to HF !!

You also have this option. The Sennheiser HD 25-SP. They are very comfortable, portable and sound good.

HeadRoom says that this one is "Among the best sealed headphones under $100. Ideal for portable use in loud environments."

I have one of this and like it very much. Other that I have is the Sennheiser HD 280 Pro. Sounds good also but are not so portable. Both are under $100.

Are you looking for buds, or phones?

If you are looking for buds go with the above, but if you are looking for some good sealed headphones i reccomend the beyer DT 831's. Those are a bit on the expensive side though. If those are too expensive go with the PX-200s

and what about the etys?
