All i've been able to find is iPods and Zunes. Does anyone know anything else? I'm not a fan of the iPod's controls and Zunes aren't cheap to import into NZ

Archos players are meant to be quite decent and if you don't mind buying used units then Iriver H3x0, iHP1x0, iAudio X5 and that's it really.

Archos are nice multi function devices but do not have good sound quality. They are among the worst in portable players. Which is a real shame as they are one of the last companies pushing high capacity players.

iRiver 120/140. Upgradable: HDD (or changeble to CF-card), battery (up to 220mAh, ~20hrs from one charge). Has the optical output and is, paired with iBasso D10, superiour to most of DAPs in SQ. It own SQ is very good too

x2 on the iRiver, or a Gigabeat F which can also be upgraded via a ZIF converter board or CF converter. No optical on the Gigabeat, however.
