Suggestions on next DIY Headphone amp

Hey all

I don't know alot about the constructing of amps and I'm only at the prill beginning stage of learning. At the moment I have only built 2 Cmoys of which I understand the circuit enough to know what is the purpose of near all components.
Very Recently I have finished my Beezar kit of the SSMH (see the SSMH for my excessive troubleshooting as well ), allthough I still want the 12AU7 version of the amp in p2p, I decided to go with the kit as well as shipping is alot and I don't want to stand here empty handed when things didn't work out. Allthough I underestimated the kit a little and had alot of stressing moments when I tried figuring everything out with my limited experience, allthough I thankfully received alot of friends from the thread . And now with the amp working and listening to it right now, my confidence went up a little.

But now it strangely starts to itch on continuing on building something, thus I'm already looking for a next build ofcourse . I'm learning about the working of tubes (which equalizer recommended me to) and everything is going smoothly. I was suggested the SOHA amp, which I actually have thought about myself. Allthough I haven't got into reading about it thoroughly so I don't know the 'differences in sound'/'advantages' not the complexities of the circuit over the SSMH.
I also considered the PIMETA v2 of Tangent which I have been waiting for, but I don't have the courage to get myself into learning about opamps without knowing how the first amplificating component, tubes, work. I also don't feel like a build which just means soldering components on the right pads. Allthough I already have the MINI³ parts partially, because I actually long for a little more advanced portable amp over my Cmoy.

I just spotted the CTH as well, so i'll follow that and read about it sometime soon.

The chance of making another 'little different' SSMH is very real, as I heard from equalizer that the 12AU7 tubes are almost everywhere available and cheap, and I haven't used any spare parts for this SSMH, so I'll have most of it. I might even 'dare' to get myself in messing around with the capacitor values as I'm reading about them.

But what are your opinions on this? Any suggestions on a educating/next step amp that isn't yet to complex with maybe an even a little more advanced sound over the SSMH? A good amp that will assist me in my learning process as well?

You might think that I'm just lazy and should read about the amps that I mentioned first before asking about them, but as school just started and time is limited, I might be suggested or strongly 'contra-suggested'(?) an amp so I could already spend my time on going very detailed in just a few amps instead of focussing on many to just know the difference.

*This msg has been partially copied from my msg I posted in the SSMH thread, I was suggested to make a thread about it as it would 'hijack' the SSMH thread with personal opinions of others. I should ahve thought it through *

I think I mentioned it all.
Oh yeah: my music preferences. I currently own a HD650 and I mostly listen to all kinds of old and new rock, jazz, blues, mixes , and sometimes a very little classical or modern (not pop though) tunes. I hope this helps

Thanks alot
With kind regards,
Dries

Ha yes, Just read the AMB page about it. Thanks for the help.
The parts on the board seem spaced enough for a beginning DIY, so I can see that advantage.

What are some personal thoughts on the sound of the amp (allthough I can't find it in your sig, but maybe you heard it before)? And it seems it's also ideal as a preamp. Allthough I really don't understand anything about the tech highlights of the amp and I'd like to step up gradually. But I guess the step between extremely simple amps and more decent highend ones is quite big, and that 'middlesteps' are less frequent.

I'd also like to consider with amps with tubes in them as the main amplification. I know the Mini³ is an opamp based amp, but I don't want to dive into serious solid state amps just yet.

Thanks alot for the suggestion, but I'm still looking around, open for suggestions. But this just shoved to the top of my list

Kind regards
Dries

While I have even less experience than Llama16 (cmoy parts are on their way!), I too am interested in a good beginnerish level DIY amp would be for the HD650's. I am looking for good synergy with the headphones in addition to being relatively easy to build. Preferably it will be a nice enough amp to not need an upgrade for some time. Maybe I should just skip the cmoy and do a B22 instead...

I'm quite liking my Pimetas with my recently acquired HD650's. v1 running OPA2107 with Sijosae buffers and v2 running OPA2107 and the smt buffers. I found the Pimeta as a good build following my cmoy.

Pimeta with Sijoase buffers is pretty awesome, just make sure to run it off 2x 9V (or a dedicated PSU) if you want to run HD650's with OPA2107

True, both my Pimetas are running 12xAAA. One is on the charger while I listen to the other.

I'm actually going to build a PIMETA v2, following the advice of tomb. I'd like to stay away from high voltage amps for maybe 2/3 more builds.
This is how I got it in my head atm, allthough it could change:
  • PIMETAv2 and MINI³
  • MiniMax/PPAv2
  • SOHAII/CK²III
    ...Lot of builds later
  • B22 and Own simple design amp

We'll just see how it goes, allthough this seems like quite a nice follow up to learn from .
Enjoy your Cmoy, building it was very fun and it sounds not bad at all with my HD650s
