So...I'm rather curious...

Hehehe, I'm cracking myself up just posting this, but I'm genuinely curious. Is anybody on here near deaf, or actually, legally deaf?

I'm just wondering if anybody REALLY has to crank up their audio gear to get good sound.

Yes, this is my 500th post.

From threads that I've seen, a fair number of people are hearing impaired, and some have no hearing in one of their ears at all.

No, in fact I'm the most quietest audiophile in human history I don't like loud sound, when I plug the headphones to my laptop, even one notch from mute is loud enough for me and when playing music on my desktop, it rarely passed a quarter the volume knob. Only when gaming I ramp up a little bit but still not loud enough that it annoys my parents, my father listening to music downstairs is louder than I am in my room, even with door close

Some of the most senior members with the craziest elite gear have perfectly normal hearing. (Which has been lab confirmed). For myself, after 3 years in the hobby, I had a work physical and my hearing was judged by a nurse to be..... Average.

This is an issue to be aware of, educated about and taken seriously if one would like to continue the hobby and enjoy the music indefinitely, but it's nothing to panic about or hype.

Heavy metal concerts raped my ears many years ago. Ever heard the phrase, "the silence is deafening," well that's tinnitus for ya.

Statements like yours Landis make me really keen to get some Ety' ER-20.

WHAT DID YOU SAY?

No, I'm not def. In my younger days, I tried to be fresh, then I got a little phat but really changed my diet in '08 and took most of it off.

I don't think I'm dev, but I do have tinnicuninglitus though.

Lmao, I just realized my iPhone auto-corrected deaf to def. Man, I use hip-speak too much apparently.

No seriously buy it. I've lost a bit of hearing through gigs and clubbing. I've got 3 pairs of ER20s now.

I do not think so.
We have members who are deaf on one ear, but never seen anyone completely deaf.

Tone deaf and blind on the other hand..

I was legally deaf at 5 (if that counts) and had to learn to read lips. Not sure how I can hear now as I dont really have any equipment I'd be happy to test it on, definitely between 16 and 20 khz though thanks to surgery (I thought it was less than this a while ago but it was actually my amp not performing anywhere near its quoted specs).

I think this experience as well as my father lead me to my fascination with sound as well as music at a young age. Perhaps even my hyperacusis (which is frankly annoying), but I think that is more to do with the frequent use of etymotics and my ears becoming used to very quiet sounds.

Synesthesia probably helped too

I'm not but my wife is. Her hearing drops to -90dB at around 400-500 Hz. In the 20 years we've been together, my voice has dropped quite a bit. A year ago she decided she'd like an iPod. I started a thread asking for the in ears with the most bloated bass. I ended up buying her some Bass Freqs and they work pretty well for her.

My only temporary disability was being blind for a day.
