Thinksound Thunder & Rain IEM Reviews – The Eco-Friendly IEM (or More Wood) - NOTE: Thunder will... - Page 5

(Also posted on other ThinkSound thread)

It's "Raining" here in Philly (with the sun shining) and I have to say, out of the box, I favor the Rain over the Thunder, and it's not all that close. Not that the Thunder were bad IEMs, not at all. But I am more of a detail/mids/highs person, and these more fit the bill. Very nice. Now, this is without burn-in, but my first two test tracks, the ones I always use, Hotel California (Hell Freezes Over) and The Way You Look Tonight (Nothing by the Best, Sinatra remasters) both sounded excellent. And as is being reported on the other ThinkSound thread, the Rain bass is not lite, it's there. Very balanced, crisp IEM.

Okay, now for a little burn-in, 100 hours or so (basically a spin on my IsoTek CD).

But before that, I had to hear "The Most Beautiful Girl in the Room," Flight of the Chonchords. Great track for testing out detail phones like the Rain. Sounds fantastic.

Also, the Rain works well with the Amp3s, no hiss, another major plus for much of my vocal/acoustic genres, which are loaded on my two Amp3s.

Agree with tstarn , The Rain is one of the few IEM's that can be used with a tolerable amount of hiss (at least to my ears) with the Amp3. Also the synergy between the Rain and Amp3 does particular well with vocal/acoustic genres. I have today been enjoying Allison Krauss and Union Station Live, sounds really great!

Wow, the more I listen to the Rain, the more I love it. I think it's one of the best value IEMs for it's price point. It's a great sounding balanced earphone. Kudos to Aaron and his group. Well done!! it sounds wonderful with the Nuforce uDAC by the way.

I wish these existed a year ago, I would have taken a pass on some expensive gear. I can't find anything truly wrong with them. They are a pleasure.

BTW For anyone interested in getting thinksound IEMs, I strongly recommend the Rain over the Thunder unless the bass boost is very important to you. The Rain are the sweet spot.

Agree with you @ jdc65. Plus, if you need more bass out of the Rain, they respond well to eq-ing. What a treat, a delight even. Gotta stop listening and start writing about them at some point here...lol

I just ordered the rain and think sound matched the price of Buy.com which is awesome! Im waiting to see how they stack up against my PFEs and RE252s.

How do you feel about the Rain/Thunder compared to Monster Turbine (my favorite IEM in its price range)?
I have no IEM experience, so I decided to pick these baby's up for walking to and from class. Thanks Average Joe for the great reviews, it helped to quickly make up my mind.

Anyone knows how the Rain's pair with a Fiio E5?

Rain review posted.

My E5 died, so I don't know about the pairing, but I would imagine it would be a pretty good one.

Love that CD. Not only are they hilarious but they are (unexpectedly) fantastic musicians. So the Rain with an amp to provide a little bottom oomph instead of the Thunder?
Yeah, the music is really good, not just freaking hilarious. I would say yes, the Rain with a decent amp/bass boost rather than Thunder. I think the Rain can be improved with that added factor, while not as sure about the Thunder.

Wanted to add something on the Thunder and Rain. To me, they are worth their current prices ($42 for the Thunder and $63 for the Rain on ebay and Buy.com), but at their original prices, $79 and $99 respectively, it's a tougher call. I wonder if those two prices were realistic, considering how quickly they dropped. In all honesty, I would not have tried the Thunder without the 25 percent discount they were offering up front, nor would I have tried the Rain at the $99 price. Very few low to mid budget phones are worth that much anymore. Guess the PR1 Pros have spoiled me.

Certainaly, the eco-friendly aspect is one to consider as well.

I have a pair of rains too. I have a tf10 and a ety er6i. I brought all 3 on a bus trip from NJ to NH(6 hrs). I had a chance to listen to all three and to put it simply, I enjoyed the rains the most. It is super comfortable for me and it's a good mix of detail and fun-ness for me. It's also a plus that it looks great and is Eco-friendly.

Thumbs up for NH, the home of the Rain and the Thunder. Best of luck to Aaron and his new company.
