Thanks oqvist, you saved me from typing out exactly the same sentiment.

I would spend more on my environment than the hifi. I would love a room with a sea view, the walls lined with books and a huge oak desk for my PC based system to sit on. When I am not on the internet I can look up and watch the weather out of the window. That would make my music and hifi sound better.

In this regard, and assuming that there will always be something newer and better, you will never be satisfied for long unless you become comfortable with the "good enough" concept.
This is only partially true in my case at least. One has to mix in some degree of reason otherwise you are constantly reaching for the sky. It's more about having a certain expectation of your ideal experience in mind when you start out. Some people settle for considerably less than achieving that initial goal because feel perhaps they are being practical or reasonable by spending less. Every time I've done this I ended up incrementally upgrading until I got to where I was wanting to be from the beginning so I find it more efficient now to just skip the middle steps.

Usually once I hit the mark I had in mind from the outset I tend to stay happy with what I have. I don't know if this is true for everybody, but it is true for me at least. It's more about feel than anything. When everything is right something just clicks and I feel a sense of contentment about the situation. When I listen to my desktop stereo I get this feeling..... when I listen to my headphone gear I don't. So I continue to plot and plan on that side of it.

At the start of this thread, I was happy to see some very 'real world' suggestions re the kind of kit that people would be prepared to go 'all out' for, but it seems to have continued further down the 'fantasy' path. Fantasy is great - its easy because you arent sacrificing anything for all that fantasy kit.

Despite the plethora of gear in some sigs, I'm of the opinion that most Head-Fiers will have (at most) 10K USD at their disposal at any given time for luxury items, usually considerably less but lets work off that figure. If you live at home with your folks, life may be different, but for most of the working Joes life will come down to a series of bills that have to be paid before you get anywhere near toys. Even when that joyous moment does arrive, there is the lure of other toys - computers, AV, cameras or motor vehicles etc - and the point of my initial post was to ask how many of us would be prepared to go all out if that '10K' dropped from the sky. In my case, its less than 10K, but I had to revise the figure when I saw how aspirational some Head-Fiers are.

Nothing wrong with aspiring to better things, but you wont be enjoying beach views with 10K. If possible, can I ask that folk nominate a single headphone rig (source->DAC->amp->ONE pair of phones) that they would be prepared to consider if they came into that kind of money. Its easy to nominate 15K CDPs etc, but something a little closer to planet earth might be helpful to many other Head-Fiers. I accept that I didnt frame my initial post as well as I might have, and I'm tempted to just start another titled 'If you had TIger Woods' money, would you spend it on audio ?' .....

Tks,

estreeter
