Would you go 'all out' if you had the money ?

Thread Starter
I started a thread a couple of months back about the 'line in the sand' many of us maintain, and it soon became clear that some Head-Fiers would spend any amount of money to satiate their audio desires. While I dont agree with that, I suddenly find myself in a position to do *either* of the following:

1. Buy a new CDP and integrated amp + speakers for my living room and the Lisa RS for my bedside rig. This would give me a 'best of both worlds' bang for my bucks.

2. Go 'all out' and get the HD800/Black Cube Linear/DAC-of-my-choice combination that has sat in 'thats crazy talk' land (in terms of my wallet, anyway) for some months.

The cost of either 'solution' will be in the 4-5K AUD range, and there is still a little voice that says 'that *is* crazy talk, son'

Disregarding my own choices for a moment, would you be willing to just throw caution to the wind and spend the lot on the headphone rig you have continually aspired to ? Its weird to note that 'serious' audio nuts wouldnt blink before dropping twice my budget on a new cartridge, but I can only assume that they have that sort of money to burn. Going into debt for a luxury item like a turntable seems like lunacy to me, but I guess its all about priorities.

We talk the talk a lot on Head-Fi, but how many of us are actually prepared to walk the walk when the funds become available ?

If you can live on (an equivalent of) about $140 USD per month, yeah, you can go all-out.

Depends on what you mean by "all-out." If spending 20 grand on a source was pocket change to me, then sure, I'd do it without even thinking about it. I'd spend 200 grand or 2 million if it wasn't a big deal. But going into debt over audio gear is just plain dumb. Now, nobody ever accused me of making good life choices but at least that's one mistake that I've managed to stay away from.

If you buy smart, treat your gear well enough to not damage its resale value, wait for the good deals, and generally try not to succumb to every FOTM or the "must-have-it-now" instant gratification syndrome, you can accumulate a hefty rig over time even on a very modest budget. Spend money, don't waste it, and you'll have a monster rig eventually.

I do really enjoy my headphones and get a lot of usage out of them. Also i did blow almost all my savings on my current setup when i got it. So i would go all out.

However i like to research before i buy so it would take me quite a while to get to purchasing the gear. It took me 9 months between having the urge for a new setup to actually find the cash and a good setup. Also i'll be going to uni next year so a practical all out setup probably wouldn't be much better than a DAC-1 and D7000s instead of a real all out atomic powered SACD and Vinyl setup.

If I could easily afford to do so, I'd be buying an O2 MK1, BHSE (or WES) and Meridian 808.2 system today, for sure.

Are you really into music? If you feel that this is part of your life to be happy with such a purchase, then yes. I would buy just one good rig, so choice two would be my option. It is so much nicer to have one grand rig then two 50/50s. It is somthing you will have for a long time. Remember how you live your life is how you live your life. There will never be second chances to get ahold of all your dreams.

For me it's simple, If you have the money get out and have some experience. If you don't have the money buy it anyway and have some experience.

the answer is quite simply... yes.

I personally could afford a lot more, but I'm happy where I am now and really am not interested in uber-high end stuff. Samsara anyone? I'm just enjoying myself and am not on a quest for the ultimate material experience. Furthermore, I think it's a mistake running oneself financially thin over this sort of stuff. But to each his own, I guess.

Probably not, but I doubt I'll ever find out.

I'd probably just buy a lot of mid and mid-high-fi cans and spend the money on amp parts (so I can build them myself) and cable assemblies. That's just me, I have weird priorities.

Probably not. I think I'd buy a bigger house, a better car and learn how to cook gourmet food before I'd spend it on audio equipment.

First, I would be happy to be in that position.

But I do know how you feel. Last time, my wife gave me a nod to spend up to 1K on headphone but I backed out myself....

I can honestly say that a DAC+Power Amp+Midrange Stax setup would more than likely keep you satisfied for a long time.

If money was no object, I don't think there is one person here who would say no.

But going into debt or eating ramen for 2 months to pay for your latest purchase is ridiculous.

If I could, I would go out right now and buy 2 rigs (dynamic and electrostat), one with a bass-heavy R10 and one with a HE90/WES.

Heck, with a 5000 AUS budget you could get a O2, GES, and any source up to $900 USD. That's a gorgeous setup, or if you prefer dynamic headphones, an HD800 or T1, and any of the hundred choices for amp/source in your budget, which would be another fantastic setup.
