Reterminating Headphone Cable?

First DIY venture here, I want to reterminate my D5000s cable with a 1/4" plug. How would I go about doing this without ruining the look of the cable (fraying it at the point of retermination)?

Is it relatively easy to do for somebody with 0 experience with this sort of thing?

It's pretty easy, heatshrink helps.

Are there any guides out there?

Look at the sticky, and there are tons of recable guides, just search for "recable". Hope you have all the tools you need (pliers, wire stripper, soldering iron, DMM).

Just becareful with the D5000 cable. If I remember correctly, the cable is like a plastic mold that completely covers all 4 wires, so its not like an outer sheath. I would recommend using an exacto knife to take off the plastic molding and use the proper wire strippers for the wires (I think around 26ga or so).

I have the automatic wire strippers so when I get down to the wires themselves I can use those without worrying about size.

I may just have a local hi-fi shop do it for me, but I have to check if they are able to as headphones aren't their specialty (had to specially order my D5000s, luckily I got a good price).

if i was doing it i would take the plug apart before cutting any wires the mark each wire L R and the grounds then cut them off then resolder onto the 1/4th inch plug easy job to do.

Yes, you definitely want to put the back of the plug on the cable before stripping wires etc. The nylon cloth covering the cables is an absolute pain, but aside from that, the hardest part is learning to strip wires without damaging them.

May I ask why?
