I have my favorite albums on cds, and listen to them at home from an old Sony walkman I found. I also have an iPod shuffle with a pair of Sony MDR-EX90LP (inner ear) headphones, I use this when I'm out of the house.

I'm just wondering if some of you could help me; where should I concentrate my money. Right now I'm looking towards something for use at home.

should I put money into:

-pre-amp
-better cd player
-headphones

I have a total budget of about 100-250 euros. (roughly 150-300 dollars U.S.)

I'm intending to buy higher quality headphones (price-quality higher than stereo), I'm thinking of Sennheisers, middle range, e.g. the hd555

Thanks for any help in advance.

hd595s!!
great unamp'd, better with amp. these benefit so much from even entry level amps (as all HPs do i suppose).

I listen mostly to prog, jazz (modal), fusion, indie, electronic rock (Notwist), and some metal

but generally I'd prefer clarity (but not too much treble), strong mids, and a 'punchy' bass (not wide and overwhelming)

that would put the Grado's high on the list. but I'm not sure about the supra-aural design, and if thats comfortable (the AKGs and Sennheisers look more comfortable)
Our music taste is the same. My sound preference is the same. Though for punchy bass read punchy only when originally recorded that way. When I say unamped, I mean straight out of an ipod or from my PC headphone jack.

My amps are the X-CANV8P and FiiO E5.

Of that list I have the K702s. They have an overall even presentation and major on clarity. They will drive with the FiiO and are very realistic and musical with strong mids with the X-CAN. They are very comfortable.

I have heard the Denons out of an ipod. Without any additional amplification I found the bass overwhelming. The mids and highs were very even. They were comfortable. The sounded fine without amping*

I have heard the HD595s out of a Yamaha stereo amp with its headphone socket. I listened for about half an hour and got sweaty ears with the vinyl pads. The presentation was even and natural, but I felt that they lacked a dynamic I have heard eleswehere with cheaper Senns. I was listening to Pink Floyd and Massive Attack.

I have SR80s. I find them comfortable, particularly buying the full sized foam pads. They have a dynamic that is great, whilst still preserving an even presentation across the range.

I have not heard the Sures.

* All headphones that I have heard, even little in ears like the Senn mx500s benefit from amping. With an amp you get more dynamic, sound stage, detail, the lot. So even though I have only heard the Denons out of an ipod and they sounded fine, I dont think I have had a proper listen to them. My Grados and AKGs unamped sound nothing like they do when amped. At least get yourself the FiiO E5 with a LOD cable and then save more for a better amp.
