recommend me a canalphone

hi there, i am newbie to forum and also in need of a new set of canalphones for upcoming travels. unfortunately i dont have the time to spend hours reading this forum for ideas on what to get, and have only briefly (in the past) had a look around and picked a few models.

anyway, my requirements are:

- sound clarity for mostly pop/rock heavy vocal music, heavy bass not necessary, only listen to a little dance music, no drum and bass.
- long, decent quality cord
- excellent isolation (A MUST), need to block out aircraft engine noise as much as possible.
- lots of tips, easy to get spares
- for use with iphone 3gs (99% of time), and sometimes macbook pro, probably never to use an amplifier
- wax cleaning tool/wax filter also needed (bit slack with cleaning the ears, always have been)
- overall good build quality (taking it travelling, everyday use etc.)

i had my eye on er4p's for a long time, and they were listed on earphonesolutions for $199 but have always been out of stock and will probably never bee replenished at that price

they recommended westone 3's as they are triple drive and cover most of my requirements, so i almost ordered but figured i'd jump on the forums and ask if there has been anything better since then?

budget is approx $400USD, and the thing is, i need to make a decision in about three days!

sorry for the post, as i really would like to spend hours reading and educating, but unfortunately i just dont have the time and need a relatively quick answer.

cheers.

yay a reply! cheers for the recommendation. it's one i hadn't considered before. a little more expensive than the westone's but they have better isolation apparently? the interesting point is that they claim to have great isolation, but dont provide dB reductions in their specs. ive read a few reviews that say isolation is excellent but doesn't it all depend on the tips? and the fit for your ear?

i guess its between the westone triple driver and the se530's

You can most certainly find them for less than $200. The lowest price I've seen recently is around $170 new (without shipping). The shure se530 is the other obvious choice at around $250 (maybe a little lower). Both are very different, but the ety er4p offers higher potential isolation if you don't mind shoving them way up your ear canal. The tips the shure comes with are much more comfortable, and I believe they can be bought for around $12 and put onto the etys if you decide to go that way. Both are built well.

I'd vote for the etys. They have the best isolation, and if you decide you would rather have the more comfortable shures you can just buy the relatively inexpensive tips.

I object to the ER4, if isolation is a must then microphonics should be thrown in. ER4's microphonics are terrible, making the candidate disqualified from the competition.

My recommendation, Westone 3, Earsonics SM2, Turbine Pro Copper.

looking at these forums, anything with a sennheiser logo on it is good (unless it's a fake)!

yeh i posted in another thread and noticed that the er4p's can be well less than $200 now. I will order from bhphotovideo as I'm going to get an e-book reader at the same time (saves shipping for me as I'm in AU)

if the extra $ for the westone's is well worth it for microphonics over the er4p then I will be happy to pay it. my source will be iphone 3gs and rarely anything else so it does need to suit (i imagine both do fine)

my previous canalphones have always been budget value for money, and i use vsonic r02pro's that i am quite happy with, using comply foam tips that are OK but dont offer the greatest isolation (i want more!)

i stay away from sennheiser as ive read too much saying they are overrated in almost all product lines, except for high end stuff that needs to be amp driven. i dont know if this is still the case these days.

build quality is also a consideration as i tend to treat my canalphones poorly after a while and almost never carry them in a pouch (although the westones i may be forced to)

microphonics are equally to more important than isolation for me. yes i want isolation but i want to be blown away by sound quality if im forking out $400ish

i guess its a money thing, if it's worth it then ill pay.

is westone um3x newer model than westone 3 (true triple driver)? edit: so it is.

better or worse? again, if anyone objects and explains something is far better for my intended usage, i am quite likely to get the westone 3's (true triple driver)

need to decide within the next 6-8 hours i think.

edit: ok, after reading replies in this thread, ive almost completely changed my mind and will actually probably go with the er4p's. i did dream of getting these once and think they will be a good buy + value for money. maybe i will one day have both to compare?

The UM3X is a triple driver IEM designed by Westone for use as a stage monitor for musicians. However, it has a strong following here and its own appreciation thread. The W3, which is also a triple driver IEM, was released a few months before it. It was designed by Westone for the consumer market.

Given that noise attenuation is important to you, I suggest you consider either the SE530 or the W3. I hasten to include the following caveat, I have not heard the W3 but I did own the UM3X for a brief time and I still own the SE530. I would recommend the SE530 over the UM3X. From what I've read about the W3, I suspect that it may be a more engaging phone than the UM3X because of added "fun" factor. Hopefully someone who has owned all three will chime in... cue Spyro.
