diyMod 5g Ipod Question about on board caps

Hi,

I've been reading through the diymod thread for a few hours now and haven't found a clear-cut answer for something I've been curious about.

I've read through most of the guides for diymod for the 5g ipod and most of them have the on-board caps and inductors removed. However, the guide on Jonathan's website states not to remove any caps or inductors. I'm assuming this means the on-board ones, but I just wanted to be a 100% sure.

The other reason why I'm curious is because this iPod may get connected to my car audio through a usb+stereo plug built into my car. Since the dock in the car probably doesn't have coupling caps inside, I imagine it could potential send DC current straight to my car speakers thus destroying them. So would leaving the onboard caps protect my car from DC current, or will it just take the direct path via the diyMod even with the onboard caps intact?

...in before qusp posts do not ever remove caps. :P
the caps for the DIY mod are in the LOD. have a look at ALO's imod LOD's alot of them have blackgates inside.
search on here for how to make a imod/diymod LOD. or buy one from a member of trade.

so you're saying don't remove the onboard caps? even though almost picture I've seem in the guides do? Sorry, just having a hard time understanding what you mean since you go on to talk about caps in the LOD.

I'm familiar with coupling caps in LODs since I had to make one for my fuze. I'm more curious on the topic of the caps on the actually circuit board inside the ipod. Hope that clears up my question. I understand I sort of rambled up there -_-;;

It's not recommended to remove the caps because it's difficult and there's more chance of damaging something. Theoretically, it's "better" to remove them if you can, for SQ's sake, but it's up for debate whether any difference would be audible. I haven't seen any direct comparison between the two versions.
Leaving the caps in place, though, won't protect you from DC current - by doing the mod, you're bypassing the stock caps (this is why iMods and diyMods need caps in the LOD). For any practical application, once you do the mod, consider them no longer functional, unless you're worried about that last 0.x% of current going down that path in addition to the new direct one.

There are two ends to every cable so if your car dock connects via RCA's I can tell you that 47uf Black Gates will fit in the cheap Neutrik RCA connectors - is that an option?

I think he is using a car stereo with iPod controls built in. In other words a remote+line out, and can't change the connector he is using.

You could consider instead of using the line out pins on the iPod, use some reserved pins.

For example, run the mod to pins 14 and 17 according to pinouts.ru, and leave the normal line out untouched.

Then you can't use any of the diy/imod lods, you would have to build your own to match your pins.
