FIXED: Dumba** rookie screw-up with rewire of SRH840, please help

I rewired everything in this can- soldered right on top of the + and - of the existing driver pcb boards (not the pcb board that is at the jack, the individual ones at the drivers). Everything looks good, I test it and have sound out of both sides but it sounds wrong, muddy. I check the L/R balance and as I run each side to zero output, I still hear sound as though both sides were wired together.
This might be a simple fix but does anyone have a clue where I went wrong?

Sounds like you may have gotten wires crossed at the plug, or there is a solder bridge or something similar inside it. Do a continuity check with your multimeter between the tip (L-channel) and the ring (R-channel) and the ground and see if you can find the problem there. Good luck!

if it sounds muddy then its most likely a short somewhere. check the plug ! only place the grounds meet.

I am wondering if the board melted and connected things. The plug is perfect.

from that pic it looks fine =/ i would use more hot glue if you ever figure it out

It seems there a 4 solder points on that board but the original wires went to the outside 2 which I copied with my wire. I think the solder flowed and bridged the inner 2 points to the outer 2 points and screwed something up. I am calling Shure to figure this out. I am pretty sure I ruined the drivers.

Well, count me impressed. Spoke with a rep at Shure (they are headquartered 15 minutes from me) and told him how I screwed things up with the drivers. He told me to come by their service dept. and pick up two new drivers he will leave for me.
I will solder to the existing wires rather than the board and that should work.
Thank you Shure!!

Wow, that's some pretty impressive customer service considering it wasn't a manufacturing defect. I'm happy to hear you got new drivers, and good luck with your repairs.

Everything working now with the new drivers. What I did was be more careful with the soldering to the board- applying generous solder to the new wire beforehand and gently soldering it on top of the existing without having it flow too much. The hardest part was running the wire under the headband which is quite difficult to undo and put back so this part looks a little amateurish. Doing a new SE cable without running new cable through the headband would be quite easy, especially using the main pcb board.
Sounds great!

Wow impressive. That's great service and you are very lucky.

WTH, that is awesome. I wonder if that will be an option for me since I am having a slight channel imbalance after rewiring everything myself. I live in FL so swinging by won't be so easy...

That's generous of them. I'd practice on some cheapo cans rewiring before going for the $180 shures...
